Overall Satisfaction with Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT

We are a Foundation in support of a University. We have been using Financial Edge for many years and are mostly enjoying the adaptation that FENXT is bringing to our work. FENXT has been fairly streamlined for going to the web based solution with some hiccups along the way. Entering journal entries is a breeze especially with the add-in tool via Excel where we can import larger files even more smoothly than our previous csv files. FENXT has provided us with a great way to organize our chart of accounts and to use the chart organizers for providing clear views of our financials with the different types of reports we can build. We are currently working on moving a lot of our spreadsheets to built in reports and attributes within the system. We are building reports that can easily facilitate our journal entries for things like endowment allocations. Many of our spreadsheets will go away once we incorporate the data into the system. We are updating our projects with notes and information so that once query is ready to fully go we can just query on attributes rather than going through other spreadsheets to find the information. We work with primarily scholarships and programs that have higher level descriptions and attributes that we are able to capture within the projects of FENXT. It'll be a lot of work but once we have all the data within the system our work should be so much easier!

Pros

  • Chart Organizers
  • Report Building
  • Attributes
  • Data Entry

Cons

  • Queries is not fully set up yet and could use more functionality within the reporting structure
  • Recurring payments do not seem to be moving forward and we have several annuities that run quarterly
  • Queue appears to be going away and report scheduling is coming, however, you cannot send to users outside of your organization. We run so many monthly reports that we used to have emailed out via queue that now we have to run them manually and save them to a sharepoint site for our campus partners to access.
  • A little concerned with printing checks once database view goes away since the one time I tried it the printing margins were totally off.
  • Integration of papersave products and cash receipts.
  • Improved efficiency for reporting
  • Ability to query on attributes
  • Efficient processing for closing out months
  • Process efficiency
  • Excellent internal controls
We just completed our most recent audit and our auditors requested examples of internal controls. FENXT has an outstanding ability to create strong internal controls that stand up to the current standards. We were able to provide exactly what our auditors wanted to see.
We currently do not utilize dashboards.
Raiser's Edge works in tandem with Financial Edge NXT. I wish that Raiser's Edge NXT was similar to FENXT in regards to having converted the database view functionality to the web version. In that regard, RENXT does not do very well since our gift processors still rely heavily on database view for doing any of their work efficiently.

Do you think Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT's feature set?

Yes

Did Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT again?

Yes

Financial Edge NXT is well suited for non profits and different sort of chart of accounts depending on how you set things up. For us it works perfect since we have several projects. However, for budgeting purposes it has not worked out to support our chart of accounts in the way that we set up our expense accounts. Mirroring our University partner they have a different structure for fund accounting that makes it more complicated for rolling up our expense accounts since we have so many of them. Again we are trying to get away from spreadsheets but there isn't entirely the full functionality due to how that reporting and budgeting is set up. If there was more flexibility for how to get accounts to roll up in a financial statement that would be great.

Using Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT

4 - Staff Accountant, Senior Staff Accountant, Controller, President.
1 - We have an IM&T partner that usually works directly with blackbaud to resolve issues on our end as well as communicate issues that might be related to blackbaud. He has the correct lingo and administrative rights to see what is going on.
  • General Ledger
  • Reconcilations
  • Reporting
  • Attributes
  • Notes
  • General Ledger segments
  • Easier reporting
  • Additional queries
  • Budget
We are likely to continue as we are pretty committed at this point. We have had this software before going to the cloud for at least 10+ years.

Evaluating Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT and Competitors

  • Integration with Other Systems
  • Ease of Use
Continuation of the software we already used and loved. Have to come to this century and join the cloud and other innovations.
We might incorporate some other pieces that we are trying to achieve in NXT. We are trying to eliminate some human error within spreadsheets by adding it to the software. We might look for other endowment allocation software and possibly a better budgeting system. The way our chart of accounts are set up the current budget module does not work.

Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT Training

  • Online Training
  • No Training
The training is semi helpful if you have already been in the system. If you are completely new it does make it kind of hard since chart of accounts will be different among organizations. For a general idea it is helpful. One complaint on training would be that as FENXT is attempting to go fully to the web solution there were often times things that were moved or changed that even the trainer was unaware of and had to adapt on the fly.
It's pretty easy to catch on and poke around to figure it out.

Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT Support

We had an issue with our SSO and it took a while to get it resolved. After finally getting escalated to the correct people they were able to look at the detail of what was going on in the actual script and figure out what was wrong and resolved our issues. It might take time but it does seem like they work through it to resolve customer issues.
ProsCons
Good followup
Knowledgeable team
Kept well informed
Escalation required
Difficult to get immediate help
Need to explain problems multiple times
Slow Initial Response
I don't think we have purchased premium support but I'm not sure.
Yes - I have reported bugs and not necessarily heard back on results.
When finally resolving my SSO issue they got to the root of the issue and figured it out. It took a few days but they did get it resolved. We had to have work arounds in order for me to be able to work which included having a back up account set up in the meantime.

Using Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT

Usability is very easy, only complaint might be a lag for tabbing through for data entry.
