Overall Satisfaction with Cisco 800 Series Industrial ISR (IR 800)

We use Cisco 831, 881, and 881w routers for small single computer sites. The 800 series used in Network Extension mode makes a great small office solution. enough ports for a PC, a printer and an IP Phone. The 800 series securely connect to our Cisco ASA headend by VPN over any internet transport available at the location.
We use the 800 series across all departments for any site location where we need a very small office.
The 800 series/ ASA combination makes locations financial feasible where where private lines would be much too expensive for the use case.
  • Connects local site to VPN headend
  • Securely adds a network subnet in remote locations
  • The security available in an inexpensive package makes these units a great value.
  • Programming can be complicated for new users
  • An easier VPN setup would be a good value add to this product
  • PoE for IP Phones requires an add-on daughter card
  • The daughter card add expense and requires that the 800 series unit be opened to install card
  • 800 Series units are a great value for very small sites
  • The 800 series have allowed us to be agile in the opening of sites quickly in under-served rural areas.
  • The only downside is having to renew the support every few years.
The Meraki Z3 falls into roughly the same category as the 800 series and requires no daughter card for PoE.
The Meraki MX are more expensive and require more infrastructure to support.
The Meraki units also completely stop working when licensing is not renewed, and are more in the class of an SD-WAN product.

The [Cisco 800 Series Industrial ISR (IR 800)] is great when we need to add a small new site in a very short time.
Our previous experience with these units makes the roll-out of new sites quick and almost seamless.
The 800 series excels in locations where we want to tunnel all traffic back to the core site.
Split tunneling for "SD-WAN" type use is not as functional as in other products.

Using Cisco 800 Series Industrial ISR (IR 800)

25 - We use these units to create Legacy VPN connections at our smaller sites. They act as basic firewall and connect the smaller sites to our Cisco Headend for fast, secure and cost-effective vpn access for the small to very small sites.
2 - The head of our help desk is Cisco Certified and can configure the Cisco ASA headend and the remote Cisco 800 series routers. They can also support and perform diagnostics and troubleshooting on the systems. We also have a network architect that can design and support the Cisco 800 series routers
  • Connecting Small sites to our core network
  • Acting as transport connection at our smaller sites
  • acting as basic firewall for the smaller sites
  • We are able to send an entire "network in a box" to our remote clinicians that may need to work from home or small office.
  • We can use the Cisco 800 series to quickly bring up a temporary site in an emergency.
  • Possible use as field units in a disaster.
  • We might be able to bring an offshore clinician online, but have all of their traffic terminate on shore.
These units are legacy technology, and will soon be no longer supported by Cisco
