Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Catalyst Switches

We've use Cisco Catalyst as both access switches and aggregation routers. For the most part we've moved away from them, but they still exist in our legacy environments. It provided a relatively easy and reliable way of connecting our servers together. Even comparing them to the new fabricpath environments that we've stood up, the Catalysts seem to be very reliable.
  • If you need a solid switch, Cisco Catalysts tend to be very stable.
  • I've mostly worked with legacy Catalyst switches and in those cases their are some speed/distribution limitations in comparison, but not everyone needs to go through the expense of setting up a fabricpath (spine and leaf) environment.
  • Their long term stability allowed us to go longer than normal between tech refreshes.
  • That stability coupled with our design and business practices have allowed us to meet our SLAs and for the most part provide our clients with the 99.99% uptime that they expect.
We had selected them prior to my arrival at this company and have since begun implementing Nexus Fabric Path. Unfortunately the Nexus equipment seems to be much less stable, but there's already been a monetary commitment to upgrading, and so we're moving forward with that. We've also worked on implementing ACI in a few environments which has also not really turned out to be quite as stable as the Catalyst gear that we had in the past.
The Catalysts we have, have been extremely stable with some devices having more than 10 years of up time. They're fairly problem free, except for the occasional line card dying but we haven't had a ton of them. In fact we've had numerous hardware issues with the Nexus line, but hardly any with the Catalyst line.
