Overall Satisfaction with Cisco UCS Series

We implemented the UCS-C series as a replacement for our aging VM hosts. We went from running the entire environment on 12 hosts at roughly 70-90% capacity to more than doubling our VMs on 4 hosts at 30-50% capacity. We went from an n-0 to a n-2 environment. The UCS-C series brought our environment to a steady state.
  • Adapts well to an existing infrastructure.
  • Deploys fast.
  • Scales up and scales out really well.
  • Cost can be prohibitive.
  • Initial deployment of the UCS fabric can be difficult.
  • We had a server arrive DOA.
  • We were able to go from 3 racks of servers running about 50/50 virtual and physical servers to 1 rack 100% virtualized.
  • With the cost saving on Data Center we were able to invest in failover infrastructure at a second location.
  • Cisco UCS is the ground work for doing a hyper converged infrastructure.
In my career I have used Dell, Supermicro, and HP. I found out of all of them the configuration and capability of the UCS-C series gave me the scalability I needed to build out and environment capable of virtualizing what I had 100% an being robust enough to handle growth for 5 years.
I would recommend UCS for new deployments, as a capacity add where it would rely on smartnet for maintenance. If you want to fully utilize the capabilities of the UCS it will require deploying the Cisco UCS fabric, this will be an added cost and there is difficulty in setting up the fabric and profiles but it is an amazingly robust and capable hardware system and will allow any company to create a solid on prem cloud environment.
