Overall Satisfaction with Control-M

We automate the execution of jobs that run processes and push/pull files to/from external sources. Some jobs are scheduled to run at a specific time, others are triggered by a file arriving/being created. The jobs are configured to generate alerts if unsuccessful, and sometimes just send a message to confirm they are done.

Pros

  • Define dependencies between jobs
  • Good visual overview of active/scheduled jobs
  • Very easy to define simple jobs via the U.I.
  • Connections to FTP sites are securely stored centrally
  • Jobs can be triggered based on the appearance or disappearance of a file, or the appearance of a row in a database table.
  • Jobs can be set to re-run x times on failure, great for dealing with temp connection issues.

Cons

  • Would really like for a job's schedule able to be defined to start at different times on different days, e.g. M-F 9 am, S & S 11 am.
  • Our systems department is much more efficient because of Control-M's alerting capability. We can assume all is well unless we get an alert.
  • We have clients to whom we need to send files at specific times of the day, and these requests have become numerous. Being able to automate these has allowed us to handle this workload without hiring staff to send files manually.
4 - All of our Control-M users are in the Systems Department, as we are responsible for the timely and accurate movement of data. Being able to automate processes that do this of course is a big time-saver. However, a big benefit is knowing that Control-M will alert us if something has gone wrong with one of our processes, so that we don't have to constantly inspect the jobs' results.
The UI is very intuitive for both setting up and monitoring the execution of jobs. It has a few quirks, like all software, but nothing serious. We have not had an automation requirements that Control-M has not been able to address.

Control-M is excellent for automating processes and and defining actions to take as a result of the job result. It works well across multiple servers, including those in Azure. Jobs can be defined and monitored by people who do not have deep technical expertise.

I can't think of a scenario that Control-M would not handle well.
