Overall Satisfaction with Datadog

Single place to see everything, breadt of the tools available cover pretty much every use case.
We focus on the most basic ones like logging/tracing/metrics, but also rely a lot on database monitoring and ci visibility.

Pros

  • database monitoring
  • alerting
  • dashboarding

Cons

  • cost management, its so hard to understand how much something will cost until you start using it
  • cost management, ,its also hard if not impossible to create alerts for spend
  • docs, they need to be kept up to date better
  • its too hard to keep costs in check
  • opentelemetry is not supported for everything so you get vendor lock in
  • it is really easy to use
  • its dashboarding and alerting are great
easy to use and implement, a new user can get into the UI and find their way around without much direction, notebooks and dashboard help a lot in that aspect.
ease of use and implementation, other than New Relic (which I think is terrible in every possible way), the other two support opentelemetry better, have more manageable costs and comparable basic services, but they do not have the breadt of services dd does.

Do you think Datadog delivers good value for the price?

Not sure

Are you happy with Datadog's feature set?

Yes

Did Datadog live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Datadog go as expected?

I wasn't involved with the implementation phase

Would you buy Datadog again?

Yes

Datadog is a great tool for pretty much everything, but past a small volume of data you need to be really careful so costs do not eat you.

if you cannot sample down data, it can get pretty expensive and fast.

I'd recommend Datadog to any company starting on their o11y journey, but would recommend them to go the opentelementry way so if they need to switch some services its easy to do so.
