Overall Satisfaction with Discord

My cohort has used Discord in our master's program. Since not every student has an iPhone, we wanted to find a group chat option that allowed for more engagement from everyone. We like that you can respond to threads, add reactions, and tag people for extra visibility. We also like that you can create separate channels. In our case, we created a new channel every time we had a new class/quarter. It made organizing our conversations easier than flooding one chat and losing any messages in the fold.

Pros

  • Multiple channel creation.
  • Ability to add reactions (emojis and custom).
  • Good-looking interface.

Cons

  • Adding friends for DMing is a little confusing.
  • Joining new servers can have some roadblocks.
  • Notification setup can be difficult, some individuals were only notified if tagged.
  • Archiving a channel without losing everything.
  • Having to upload images before sharing instead of accessing everything in my own library.
  • Better collaboration and communication on projects/assignments.
  • Easier to break off into small groups to talk about something.
  • Quick, urgent messages notifying the right people.
I like Slack for more professional settings, but Discord is excellent for casual groups, especially when a few people do not have iPhones. They're very similar, but I think there are a lot of Discord features I don't take advantage of, mainly because there seems to be so much in the sidebar that overwhelms me a bit.

Do you think Discord delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Discord's feature set?

Yes

Did Discord live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of Discord go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Discord again?

Yes

Discord worked well for us in an academic setting, although I would probably recommend something like Slack--which has more professional connotations--for a work setting. Discord is great for more casual conversation because it has a connotation for being frequently used by gamers, Reddit users, large groups of friends, and people interested in a particular topic.
