DraftSight is used as a low-cost alternative to AutoCAD to interpret AutoCAD files.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Low cost way to open DWGs
It opens DWGs
DWGs can be opened with the software

Cons

Cannot export files in a format that any other program can understand
Cannot open exported files in Cinema4D but I can open files created by AutoCAD
This is vital to my production pipeline

Return on Investment

Its been a cost so far
many projects have not utilised it enough
Considering cancelling my subscription

Alternatives Considered

AutoCAD

Not in the same league. AutoCAD seems to just work. Draftsight doesnt.

Adobe Illustrator CC, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, SketchUp

I would like amend my review but it wont let me to increase the rating to 6 out of 10. What I have found is that files natively created in AutoCAD often wont open in draftsight fully. Biggest issue is XRef missing as many people in industry do not flatten these documents correctly before sending them out. I have found that documents created with draftsight will export for use in Cinema4D but as stated above I cannot seem to export complex DWGs that were created in AutoCAD for use with Cinema4D. I imagine that all of the linework needs exploding which I had not done, but this defeats the point of importing polylines which can then be extruded. Exploded linework cannot be extruded.
