Overall Satisfaction with GitLab
GitLab has been great serving as a foundation to manage our source code. The team has been able to create and manage repository with version control and branching that has resolved a bunch of prior issues with the code merge, especially given the different teams that collaborate on the same code
Pros
- Robust Git repository management
- CI/CD Pipeline
- Security and Vulnerability Scanning
Cons
- UI can use some improvements and takes quite getting used to
- Slow at times
- Finding stuff for troubleshooting can be a bit difficult
- Helped tremendously with the CI/CD pipelines speed
- Better resolution of code conflicts
- Improved deployment experience
We have recently migrated from Bamboo to GitLab across our enterprise as part of our tech modernization roadmap. GitLab provides a all-in-one platform for integrated code management. The only advantage that Bamboo had over GitLab was the integration with JIRA. The streamlined CI/CD and single pipeline configuration is a game changer
While we have a separate tools like Veracode to scan for vulnerabilities - the security features provided by GitLab for automated security testing like SAST, DAST, IaC scanning, etc. has helped us detect the vulnerabilities early. This has definitely helped since our scanning is performed by a centralized team and detecting VNs early allows us to put a fix right away rather than waiting for the scan team
The shift left approach has helped us detect any problems early in the process. We have over 60 developers in our teams sharing the components of the codes and environments. GitLab has allowed us to improve our collaboration and reduced the chances of breaking the build when integrating our code.
