Overall Satisfaction with HP Data Protector

HP Data Protector is our enterprise wide backup and recovery solution, we have been using HP Data Protector for 17 years. We currently have two cell managers one that is on the current version 9.04 and one that is on version 7.03 for our legacy operating systems, Oracle and MSSQL databases. This flexibility allows us the ability to backup and restore critical production systems and databases with the older version which supports these architectures and platforms and also have a solution that supports the latest operating systems and databases with our 9.04 cell.
  • Easy to install and set up cell manager, deploy clients and configure backup devices. Integration options for databases and virtual environments makes backup and restore of these systems easier through the GUI.
  • Scheduling options allow the user to set specific times for backups of a host or group them together with the advance scheduling option and set priorities of which systems get access to backup devices.
  • Licensing options are tiered and can scale from a very small environment to a larger one when needed.
  • Granular recovery extension plugins need to be documented better and kept up to date, this would aid in the installation of these plugins.
  • When deploying Granular Recovery Extensions for VMware and Exchange, security options of the cell need to be turned off (Secure Cell and Encrypted Communication).
  • Reporting on scheduled backups via the advanced scheduling option are non-existent, this needs to be available.
  • Same solution for 17+ years provides stable environment and builds in house expertise saving business on training.
  • Licensing structure provides cost savings to business.
  • Ease of use for operators provides quick response when restores are needed by the business.
When selecting a backup solution for our virtual environment we chose HP Data Protector for its cost savings in licensing, our familiarity with the software and the ability to backup to disk, tape or both with the standard installation.
HP Network Node Manager, SolarWinds Log & Event Manager, vSphere
HP Data Protector is suited for medium to large environments that are mixed platform shops, it can handle backup and restores of most major databases and MS applications along with Unix and Linux. It has de-duplication and backup to disk functionality which can be licensed as needed. The virtual environment backup options cover the major players in that area.
