Overall Satisfaction with IBM Power

This system hosts the Oracle database and Cerner Millennium middleware for Hospital information systems. Using Power VM we've partitioned this server into 2 hosts - 2 VIO servers, 1 Database server, and 1 Cerner millennium application server. The beauty of Power System is that it is very reliable, hardware monitoring is done very reliably through home calls.
  • Very powerful! With 1 CPU and 256 GM memory, it can handle the workload of the entire hospital's patient information system.
  • The hardware itself is very reliable. You get warnings and get home calls before actual failures.
  • System is fully redundant.
  • Easy to use GUI to configure the server.
  • LED display to show messages in a language rather than code.
  • Decrease power consumption.
  • Very reliable hardware.
  • Engineered to run long time without error.
  • Expensive.
IBM Power System S924 stacks up very well against Oracle Sun. The product future is well established. IBM is investing a lot of research and development to stay relevant in this segment. The combination of PowerVM, AIX, and the Power system makes this stack very reliable to run mission-critical systems.

Yes

Did IBM Power servers live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of IBM Power servers go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy IBM Power servers again?

Yes

For high availability system when clustering is not possible. For example, an enterprise needs to host a mission-critical database, then S924 is the hardware. It's very reliable as opposed to any commodity server. On the other hand, if an application is can handle downtime, then commodity servers are a great option since they are relatively cheap.
