Overall Satisfaction with IBM Storage FlashSystem

The integration into our SVC and the midrange systems are very well working. We do use cross site replication and global mirror which in turn is easy setup and the consistency groups are well maintained. The storage does global mirroring but also internal cross room replication as well. The integration of cloud object storage also helps in tiering the overall system.
Our managed customer environment utilizes high-performance storage systems to support demanding IOPS workloads and virtualized backup infrastructure. These systems consistently exceed required random read/write and sustained speeds, ensuring rapid data protection and recovery, particularly in the event of cyber incidents. The access times during the recovery are highly critical due to low RPO and RTOs

Pros

  • The read and write times on these devices are extremely fast and responsive
  • The IOPS are achieved easily for the applications that have high requirement
  • The expansion and scaling down of pools are quite easy as well

Cons

  • The flexiblity of upgrading the flash modules for a higher capcity needs to be allowed
  • The user interface for the management console is sometimes a bit confusing
  • the configuration of call home can only be done to a specific IP address but not a dns name
  • The flash modules are quite expensive and often requires a lot time for delivery
  • The flash modules have a longer life compared to competition
  • The performance is outstanding compared to competition
  • The software part is sometimes not very user friendly specially in the administration.
We are currently using this in a high IO database environment emulating a mainframe system . the performance is nearly close to original storage that was on the Mainframe. The High IO demands are easily met with sufficient read write speeds , the random IO is also highly responsive. The latency is close to 0 and we are happy with the results.
The performance is higher compared to the competition and the integration with other IBM tools are much easier. We chose IBM over the performance achieved compared to the competition, the POC showed the features and benefits over the other. There may be small lacking fancy features , but we chose IBM storage for the stability.

Do you think IBM Storage FlashSystem delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with IBM Storage FlashSystem's feature set?

Yes

Did IBM Storage FlashSystem live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of IBM Storage FlashSystem go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy IBM Storage FlashSystem again?

Yes

Flash storage is an ideal solution for environments demanding high input/output operations (I/O) and frequent read/write cycles. We successfully deploy this technology for a client's high-performance backup infrastructure, where it serves as the backend storage for multi-stream data writes, connected via a 100Gb network interface. There is also a Tiered based approach.

Using IBM Storage FlashSystem

20 - THe security and resilency team who are managing and administering the storage systems.
10 - All are from storage and resilency teams
  • Performance
  • Stability
  • scalability
  • For replication of data internally
  • Backup snapshots
  • For disaster recovery
THe performance and stability are the primary reason for the recommendation.

Evaluating IBM Storage FlashSystem and Competitors

  • Scalability
  • Integration with Other Systems
IBM Flash storage was integrated with the SVC we are already having. The system not only connects the flash system but also the GPFS and the IBM Object storage used as S3 target to move data. The interoperability of the products makes it very easy to design a solution with the same ecosystem.
There is no change in the evaluation process as such but we would rather run multiple POC with other vendors as competition now is more fierce in the filed of storage with many offering cutting edge features with the cost in mind specially when the IT systems are mainly pressured into driving costs down.

IBM Storage FlashSystem Implementation

THe engineer had sufficient knowledge and access to the knowledge base to troubleshoot when things were not running as expected in the intial configuration phase.
  • Implemented in-house
  • Third-party professional services
Change management was a big part of the implementation and was well-handled - The delivery time lines were often missed or pushed and this required a lot reschedule of changes which is always a challenge in large enterprises.
  • Missing parts
  • change approvals

IBM Storage FlashSystem Training

  • Online Training
  • No Training
THe training is often selfpaced and easy to follow if you have worked previously with other storage products. The content is clear and contains all the information needed for an admin to learn. However the troubleshooting part is not always included and this is dependent on forums or other sources where the information is not accessible very easily.
No really, it requires some basic knowledge on storage products , might be IBM or other vendors to be able to understand the functionalities.

Configuring IBM Storage FlashSystem

THe initial config always requires a professional service to be available to support. The initial config is complex and cannot be done by end user / administrator teams.
To follow the IBM redbooks or the forums for guidance.
No - we have not done any customization to the interface
No - we have not done any custom code

IBM Storage FlashSystem Support

Sometimes the knowledge of the support agent is quite limited and the support always has to route through the level 1 agent to screen all the informtion provided. Then its esclated to the next level support with the all collected data . The logs are always uploaded along wiht the case but still its reviewed at the lower level and then escalated / handed over to the next level if its complex issue to solve.
ProsCons
Good followup
Kept well informed
Escalation required
Yes, The ability to get quick support or initial repsonse , the premium support is very much required. As as enterprise customer this becomes an essential part of the support package. The business cannot affort any minimal downtimes and required round the clock support and to be able to resolve issues in a timely manner.

Using IBM Storage FlashSystem

ProsCons
Like to use
Relatively simple
Easy to use
Well integrated
Consistent
Convenient
Feel confident using
Requires technical support
  • The overall administration of the system
  • integration into other IBM products or environments
  • The reporting features and its ease of setup.
  • The initial configuration defnitely needs professional support
  • The expansions are generally challenging as this requires complex installations.
  • The upgrades are quite limited in terms of features / cost

IBM Storage FlashSystem Reliability

We have been able to scale this storage system whenever there has been requirement for additional capacity and performance. with the help of deduplication we have been able to build quite a robust environment.
we usually have never had problems with the storage going down, ofcourse there have been disk failures as part of redundancy it works well and didnt have problems with unavailablity.

Integrating IBM Storage FlashSystem

THe APIs are not very easy to connect and requires special configurations.
  • SAP
  • ERP
It was straight forward implementation / integration as the target systems are presented with a LUN From the flash system
  • HANA
  • Object storage
Yes they do support
  • File import/export
NO
More standard APIs to be integrated for application integrations

Relationship with IBM

The sales team are always easy to access and connect with ,but post sales are a bit of challenge.
THe aftersales support is not as quick as the initial support from the sales team.
THe pricing and the delivery timelines
None at the moment.

Upgrading IBM Storage FlashSystem

  • Yes performance to cost ratio is much lower
  • the stability in unmatached
  • Better features
  • user friendly
  • opensource integration
