Overall Satisfaction with Matillion

We use Matillion for a lot of data jobs and schedules as data engineers. Most of the stuff is where we are loading our production tables in our data warehouse based on Redshift. Staging data from different APIs, so a lot of Python components and SQL components. Now we have started using shared jobs, so a lot of repetitive stuff is done in shared jobs. We try to have fewer schedules. We also try to schedule stuff in our main data pipelines, such as every hour, week, month, and day.

Pros

  • The user interface of your data pipelines makes it easier for people who aren’t as techy as data engineers to observe what's going on.
  • Customer support is quick, not always as efficient as you would want it to be, but still.
  • Nice documentation available.

Cons

  • Python latest versions aren’t there.
  • Matllion API could be improved as it doesn’t provide audits in the API, like who made the last changes to your data job.
  • Faster ETL workloads for sure. Maybe it could improve so that whenever we use a component, it could ask whether this should be part of extract, transform, or load.
I had no prior experience in data engineering. I had touched airflow, and that’s it. Starting my career on million was an easier curve.
Very quickly, in a day or two.
I agree with this notion of scalability as I have personally seen from version 1.6 to 1.75.
My manager selected Million based on his previous work experience. He believes it is easy to use and maintain, cheaper than competitors, and suitable for our use case.

Do you think Matillion delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Matillion's feature set?

Yes

Did Matillion live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Matillion go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Matillion again?

Yes

In a fast-growing startup-like environment, you’d want a graphical user interface representation of all your data work instead of using tools like Airflow. It’s good to deal with many ad hoc tasks, including in-house and external APIs, data lakes, and data warehouses. It’s also cheaper.
