Overall Satisfaction with Microsoft Exchange

Our managerial staff leverage Microsoft Office and hosted Exchange across several companies, including the overseeing ownership management company. The previous two employers over the last 22 years have also depended on MS Exchange, to a much greater degree, including Unified Communications.
  • Unified Communications with Cisco VOIP (replacing the Cisco voice mail component)
  • Integration with Microsoft Office (Outlook for email client)
  • Email Archiving - The archived email still appears in a mirrored folder structure within Outlook.
  • Outlook shows "presence" for users via Cisco Presence - if they are available, in a meeting, vacation, etc.
  • Some advanced functionality requires using PowerShell - Got used to it...
  • We are currently using Hosted Exchange from a provider with archaic pricing - pick your provider wisely
We use both - hybrid environment. It's more costly, but change at this point is difficult.
At my current employer, they elected to use Gmail for non-management staff due to cost, even though, with the recent price increases for G Suite, Exchange, or even MS Hosted Exchange would save a bundle. Our current Hosted Exchange provider has an archaic cost structure - hasn't altered pricing in several years. We are paying about $25/box, where MS Hosted Exchange currently starts at $4/box. MS Hosted Exchange is a great cost solution for those that want Exchange features, but don't have / want onsite servers. I also can't comment about the current state of Exchange malware protection. Historically, we found Forefront and its replacement lacking the protection we needed. We made an excellent decision opting for Mimecast (this was about five years ago).
