Overall Satisfaction with Microsoft SQL Server

SQL Server is used company-wide: All of our business data is stored in SQL databases and all of our applications utilize SQL in some capacity.
  • Scales well
  • Widespread usage means resources are more readily available.
  • Reliable when configured and maintained properly.
  • *Very* complex
  • Performance can be poor when configuration isn't tweaked just right.
  • System resource intensive, and some resources are capped by licensing.
  • Upgrading to newer versions is difficult and time-consuming.
  • Allows for practically unlimited data storage.
  • Easily configure automated tasks.
  • Active development of new features.
  • When SQL is working properly, we have seen increased availability and speed of accessing data.
  • When SQL is not working properly, we have been severely handicapped in almost all areas of operation.
Microsoft SQL Server is still the industry standard for the type of development we do, and the types of applications that we use. Almost every developer or analyst we hire has at least a reasonable grounding in the use of SQL servers, and it is almost universally compatible with most business tools and apps.

SQL Server is a good choice for situations where a more industry-standard database server is a better fit than an open-source option, or when products or development that is based on other Microsoft tech will be used.
