Overall Satisfaction with Microsoft System Center

We use Microsoft System Center to streamline our endpoint deployments and configuration. We utilize software deployment capabilities to manage upgrades and patching to 500 endpoints. Microsoft System center also helps us to deliver consistent device naming conventions/schemas and tie these in to our asset register. We also take advantage of device imaging and building automations.

Pros

  • Imaging/deployment
  • Automation of administrative tasks
  • Software delivery and version tracking

Cons

  • installation of SCCM - could be simpler
  • Endpoint protection setup - complex
  • Licensing costs
  • Significant Technician time claw back (less time required for deployments)
  • tighter company compliance (asset register accuracy)
  • increased security compliance (upgrades & patching)
  • Greater added value to Microsoft volume licensing options - central store of software in system center and can be deployed with ease.
Overall we found Microsoft System Center's usability good. As with all software there are things that continue to be developed but the baseline is definitely workable . Day to day use is logical after initial setup has been completed with each set of policies making sense to admins once created. The setup of system center itself was a little tricky, but there is good guidance from both microsoft and online communities (google too!) to support you if needed. Microsoft System Center really has positively transformed our previous systems and working practices for the better, we like to "train hard and fight easy".
Microsoft System Center really integrated with our windows system better than any other 3rd party product which obviously you would expect to a certain extent. Our main reason to procuring System Center (apart form the options)was licensing costs. We already had a Microsoft volume licensing agreement and simply added system center to the same agreement. Other 3rd party software vendors tend to have some lengthy terms and conditions and greater subscription costs which in turn don't supply the same level of capabilities. We trust Microsoft as a vendor and find its products the most cost effective for our needs.

Any organization that has medium to large networks will have a strong business case to deploy and utilize Microsoft System Center. Once setup it is incredibly powerful and really adds an important layer of administrative capabilities, building from the Microsoft deployment toolkit (MDT) options many organizations already use. For us, immediately, we found being able to automate office areas and classroom IT suite OS deployments overnight extremely valuable, giving us back significant technician time and avoiding disruption to the working day.
