Use Cases and Deployment Scope

MS SQL is being used as our primary database throughout our entire IT department. We have almost completely moved off Oracle into MS SQL. It is the backend storage for all our applications which supports all app development.

Pros and Cons

Very fast data storage and retrieval
Great support for ORMs which provide a layer of abstraction over MS SQL
Great community of support and users
SSMS is a nice GUI for interfacing with MS SQL

Licensing costs over free to use DB systems

Return on Investment

MS SQL has had an incredible ROI as without it we could not develop any of our apps
Licensing costs are a consideration
Many developers are familiar with MS SQL which makes hiring additional support easier

Alternatives Considered

MySQL and Oracle Database

Has better support than MySQL and more developers are familiar with it. Oracle syntax is more cumbersome and less developers are experienced these days with Oracle.

If you are familiar with SQL and T-SQL the overall usability is great through SQL Server Management Studio.

Support Rating

There are tons of questions/answers on Stack Overflow and large community of users. It's probably the most used RDBMS platform in the industry so there is someone you can always speak to with questions/thoughts.

Likelihood to Recommend

MS SQL is well suited for transactional database systems. It's not necessarily optimized as a data warehouse for reporting or such, but is rock solid as an RDBMS.
