Overall Satisfaction with PitchBook

We use PitchBook to do two things predominantly. First, we research potential LPs around the globe. Second, we look at startups in our industry that we can look to for valuations and activity in a specific market. This helps us quickly get up to speed in new geographies.

Pros

  • Relatively good UX
  • Easy to get started
  • Good startup data

Cons

  • Sometimes fields are missing if they don't apply which is quite confusing (instead of showing up blank or with a zero)
  • Better international LP data
  • Better international fund data
  • Usually it's time savings in terms of research
  • Can also be a sanity check on gut assumptions
While they are not super proactive (could be nice to have more onboarding and someone checking in regularly to make sure you are getting the most out of the platform), if a problem arises they are pretty good at getting back to you in a quick fashion.
Quality is not perfect for sure...but overall, I think the data is definitely directionally correct. We use PitchBook data when evaluating a deal, when entering a new geography and when fundraising a new fund.
I think the UX is pretty good and self-explanatory. There are some strange components (for example, if you search and there are no results in a certain data field, it hides the entire field rather than just saying none or zero). But once you use it for 30 minutes, it's very easy to get the hang of. Definitely a good part of PitchBook for sure!
I think they are all similar but PitchBook has more data around startups and not only focused on LPs so we can get more out of this tool than the others that are predominantly focused on LPs.

Do you think PitchBook delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with PitchBook's feature set?

Yes

Did PitchBook live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of PitchBook go as expected?

I wasn't involved with the implementation phase

Would you buy PitchBook again?

Yes

PitchBook is great for funds based in the US. It is still helpful for international funds but definitely less robust and less detailed outside of the US. It's also quite helpful to see deal activity and size of deals so that you can calibrate to the market and industry in which you invest.
