A complete PaaS solution for private cloud environments
Overall Satisfaction with Red Hat OpenShift
Red Hat OpenShift is a complete PaaS solution for developers as well as for deployment & configuration engineers who manage & create the underlying infrastructure for cloud-native applications. My use case is to host containerized RAN applications of mobile operators over EDGE servers in a relatively less resource-intensive infrastructure. Lifecycle management of the application, i.e., the CNFs in the case of Telcos, is relatively easy with Red Hat OpenShift.
Pros
- LCM of CNFs
- Security of the underlying environment
- Modular Support of desired operators for Telco applications
- Supporting all Storage & Networking solutions in the form of CSIs & CNIs
Cons
- Initial deployment of the cluster
- RBAC & User management
- Lack of In-built observability solutions
- Lack of In-built performance monitoring
- 20% improvement in LAB PoCs completion times
- Improved operational efficiency
- Excellent integration with GitOps resulting in ease of node deployment
I can't comment on the development part as I am not the developer but I can tell about the deployment that it is greatly enhanced with the integration of GitOps with Red Hat OpenShift. The maintenance is also easy for the infrastructure because the Red Hat OpenShift console provides all the policy based alerts in the governance tab
I work for a private cloud datacenter environment where Red Hat OpenShift remains the best choice because of its security & simple UI interface

- Used as a CaaS for Telco RAN applications like vCU & vDU
- Used as a Multi cluster manager (RHACM) for Radio sites
- Used as a pre-staging tool for Edge sites i.e. COTS servers
- Used as a multi-cluster manager instead of using an NMS or EMS
- Used in automating the deployment of Edge sites instead of manual deployment
- Pushing security policies, Config changes and IAC codes to sites without even touching them
- Pre-staging of COTS servers with a min required software level and shipping them to sites to save deployment time during live migrations of radios
- Used as a security controller for EDGE sites
- Developing rApps in context of ORAN standards and connecting RAN sites via O1 interface
