Overall Satisfaction with SAP Datasphere

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use SAP Datasphere to integrate and harmonize Spend data from multiple ECC and S/4 systems and enrich it further to drive our Spend analytics in SAP Analytics Cloud. This has helped in presenting a holistic global view of Spend information to drive better decision making and negotiations with suppliers within the organization. Going forward we plan to migrating more of our on-prem BW/4 content over to Datasphere to leverage the AI capabilities within BDC using SAP Databricks.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Ease of data modeling in a graphical interface for both IT and Business users
Provides a collaborative environment to implement analytics use cases between IT and Business
Facilitates easy integration of other cloud sources of data with SAP data for more enriched and holistic analytics use cases

Cons

There needs to be more advanced features available for scheduling of data pulls into SAP Datasphere via Task Chains. These should facilitate integration scenarios with backend systems to be able to schedule them based on events or process completion triggers such as process chains in BW/4 as an example. Only time based scheduling is currently available in SAP Datasphere.
To facilitate easier transition and integration of BW/4 data models there should be an option to use ABAP as a means for defining logic in transformations in addition to Python esp. with SAP data based use cases.
It will be good to see some functionality of organizing business users into Teams similar to SAC for ease of administration and content management.

Return on Investment

SAP Datasphere has helped in better analysis of our Spend data at a holistic level to drive optimization of procurement decisions across our suppliers resulting in cost savings.

Usability

Ease of use and integrations with content from SAP products although there is room for additional features to make it as robust and feature rich as BW/4 platform.

SAP Datasphere is well suited for scalable cloud based data integration scenarios which also opens up the doors for AI driven insights which are much harder to achieve with on-prem data warehouses. Considering the licensing model of SAP Datasphere being based on consumption driven capacity units cost can be a big consideration for organizations with large volumes of data that can be a pre-requisite for data mining and AI use cases. So this can be a bottleneck or not so well adopted scenario for SAP Datasphere.
