Overall Satisfaction with Solarwinds Backup

Solarwinds is being used to backup the configuration for the networking devices. It makes it easy to retrieve past configs to go back to "when it was working before" and troubleshoot what could have caused changes and issues. We use it for a few server backups as well, but primarily we use it for networking.
  • Easy to retrieve past backups for troubleshooting purposes.
  • Easy to test backups are working when adding/editing nodes.
  • Sends failed backup report for nodes that did not successfully backup.
  • Unless a large number of pollers is deployed, Solarwinds as a whole can be slow.
  • Nodes can occasionally stop backing up for unknown reasons.
  • Large numbers of nodes can cause long backup times.
  • Saved time on troubleshooting when trying to find "what changed" when something went wrong.
  • A good place to keep a "base config" when adding similar network devices.
  • Makes recovering of failed devices fast and easy.
When the nodes are backing up properly, this product is the type of thing you set and forget. There were multiple instances where we had a device fail, and we were able to reconfigure a spare almost immediately. Backups being stored in the private cloud were easily accessible and there when we needed them.
The management console of Solarwinds backup is relatively easy to use. There are times where the dashboard feels a bit clunky, but that tends to be the case with most monitoring/backup dashboards; you have to find a balance between having too many/too little features available on the page. I'm not in the UX side of things, so I'm not quite sure what makes the dashboard feel lacking at times.
  • SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor
Using multiple Solarwinds products has made it easy for us to manage and monitor devices in our environment. Using Solarwinds for both backups and monitoring ensures that the two separate products are compatible, and if something is not working properly between the two, only a single support call is required; instead of having to set a up time between two different engineers and do a long, taxing working session.
I did not make the decision to purchase Solarwinds Backup.
Solarwinds Backup is ideal for individuals looking to keep a consistent backup of devices in their environment. We used it primarily for networking equipment. It is easy to set up, as it is one of the steps available when adding a new device to solarwinds. It is probably not an ideal product to use for long-term (1 month+) backups.
