Overall Satisfaction with SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor
Several departments at my employer use SAM for our application monitoring needs. The best thing about SAM, much like other SW tools, is it's integrated with other SW products. SAM works flawlessly with NPM for server maintenance and monitoring. We are able to quickly address software failures via alerts and reports.

- SAM is customizable, almost too much
- SW relies on it's customer base for direction (too heavily)
- SAM needs a little too much customization at times
- Downtime is greatly reduced thanks to alerts
- NOC can monitor server applications to minimize down time
- Reports can show trends and historical data
I've never had to use other software, so I can't personally answer this question. I know from reading about other tools that they are mostly very similar though. Thankfully SAM completes our needs (at least for now anyway) so we aren't really using anything else (aside from things that have been inherited).
