Overall Satisfaction with Tableau Server
We are a Tableau OEM partner. We are a SaaS company with a web application that incorporates Tableau Server in the delivery of analytics for the education space.
Through our web app - and by proxy, Tableau - our clients are able to run comparable analysis against a back-end data warehouse using the visuals we design, create, and maintain.

Pros
- The visuals are beautiful and powerful, and the interface is easy to understand.
- The Tableau REST API provides a very functional programmatic interface between our web app and the back-end server.
- We use Tableau Server for Linux, which greatly simplifies the installation and maintenance of the server architecture.
Cons
- While I have some thoughts for improvements in the Tableau Desktop application, the server environment is a powerful, growing, and improving software. No significant cons.
- The foundation of our business was built largely using Tableau server - the overall value that Tableau has brought is hard to quantify. A lot.
- One challenge we've encountered is when the server has experienced interface design changes. Since we use it as a part of a larger application, even minor layout changes have a negative impact on our environment.
- The JavaScript API is a tad limited, so we've had to do some creative programming to work around those limits.
- The (fairly) opaque underlying database structure puts additional limitations on our ability as an OEM/reseller partner. There are several metrics that would benefit us if we had more insight/access.
