Overall Satisfaction with Teradata Vantage

We use Teradata Vantage as our enterprise data warehouse platform. We ingest data from internal systems (i.e. EHR, HR, GL) and external vendors (i.e. benchmarking, claims, reference data) in order to provide insights for patient care, finance and labor forecasting, operational reporting, and many other use cases throughout the organization. Teradata provides us with the ability to quickly ingest large volumes of this data and make it available to our business intelligence and advanced analytics applications.

Pros

  • Fast data ingestion
  • Integration with cloud storage and open table formats
  • Massive parallel processing queries

Cons

  • More self-service system configuration capabilities
  • Improved support communication status details and update frequency
  • Incorporate additional details from support articles into product documentation
  • Our data loads compared to our previous non-MPP database platform are ten time faster.
  • Analytical queries over large volumes of data run significantly faster allowing business users to receive the reports they need hours or even a day or two sooner than they used to.
  • The performance advantages have allowed us to expand the amount of data we can provide opening up opportunities for more departments to take advantage of our analytic capabilities.
While the tooling to interface with the system from an end user's perspective and also from an administrative perspective has improved significantly since we started using the platform, there can still be a learning curve, and some rough spots could be smoothed. Some existing integrations with other applications could be improved as well.
Microsoft provides some great solutions but often times they are only providing the foundation for other vendors and partners to build off of, requiring you to work with their partners to fill out the capabilities or get to the level of performance you need. From a TCO prospective, Teradata has always compared well against the other vendors we have compared it to, most recently Azure Synapse, Databricks, and Snowflake. Cost is often the biggest factor we have to contend with, so we have done POCs and spoken with existing customers using the other platforms in order to incorporate their feedback into our decisions.

Are you happy with Teradata Vantage's feature set?

Yes

Did Teradata Vantage live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Teradata Vantage go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Teradata Vantage again?

Yes

In my experience, Teradata is well suited organizations who have a firm grasp of their needs, have a moderate to advanced level of technical knowledge, and are able to integrate or replace existing technologies with the Teradata platform as needed. I've networked with other Teradata customers from large national banks to small 10-20 employee niche data related businesses; if your data can take advantage of Teradata's platform performance, it can be a great solution.
