Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Availability Suite
Veeam Availability Suite is used as a complete backup and business continuity platform for our VMware virtualized environment. We also use it to back up a small number of physical servers. Veeam helps us address the issue of both backing up our virtual machines in a consistent and easy to manage solution. We also use it to create offsite offline replica VM servers for our production systems as a part of the DR/BC strategy.
Veeam is also a very useful tool for performing data center migration activities or VM relocation activities that require moving large amounts of data in a small outage window to separate VM environments. You can use the replica functionality to pre-stage your data in the new location and then during the cutover window you only will need to send the changed blocks, greatly reducing the outage time requirement to migrate large systems.
It also does a great job of backing up SQL and Exchange.
Pros
- reliable architecture from a product that has been around for a long time as a leader in VM backups. It works without many issues that you might see as a system admin who deals with backup systems
- Backup times are quick and in integrates well with a large number of storage products for the target storage.
- Replicas are easy to setup and manage.
- You can take backups from Snapshots with certain storage arrays. (Pure Storage in our case)
Cons
- The way it's licensed. The product itself is licensed per socket, just like VMware is licensed. This basically causes every ESX server you add to your environment to have a tax on it by Veeam to backup any workload on that host.
- I'd like to see some changes around how data can be offloaded to Azure or AWS for long-term backup.
- Automation programmability could be better, canned reporting is basic.
- The restore "explorers" work, but they can take quite a long time to load up.
- I can't restore in Azure or AWS Virtual machine native format. ie. universal recovery.
- it's a backup product that works and has also assisted with other unexpected utilities.
- Veritas Backup Exec, Veritas NetBackup and System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM)
