Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup for AWS

We had the need to ensure that our production ERP system, hosted in AWS, had a resilient DR solution in the event that the region we hosted it in was to become unavailable. Veeam Backup for AWS checked all the boxes for cross-account replication and backup of our production workloads into another AWS region. It also helps migrate some infrequently used workloads to our on-premise data center in order to reduce AWS compute and storage charges.
  • Cross account backup and replication
  • Disaster recovery of AWS workloads
  • Makes failover of production resources simple
  • Could provide a little more automation of failback
  • Automating VSS support on instances
  • Compared to other offerings we're saving by paying an annual license fee
  • Have used Veeam Backup for AWS for purposes outside the scope of the initial intentions, adding value
  • Has been invaluable for testing updates/upgrades to production environments
Veeam Backup for AWS integrates flawlessly with our in-place datacenter installation of Veeam Backup and Replication, making moving workloads from the cloud to on-prem easy and fast. Creating test environments on other AWS accounts and regions is also easy and fast, making testing failover and failback processes reliable and repeatable.
Before we moved to Veeam Backup for AWS we were using N2WS as our AWS backup and DR provider. As N2WS was once owned by Veeam, the products are very similar, but the added benefit of integration into our on-prem installation of Veeam Backup and Replication tipped the scales. The added benefit of cost savings due to the billing model differences between N2WS and Veeam is also nice.

Yes

Did Veeam Backup for AWS live up to sales and marketing promises?

Did implementation of Veeam Backup for AWS go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Veeam Backup for AWS again?

Yes

AWS does not provide disaster recovery out of the box, so you must provide your own solution. Veeam Backup for AWS is well built and headed in the right direction in terms of functionality and ease of use. It is very easy to set up and maintain in medium-sized environments that we're currently using it for. Also, their support is top notch. If they can't figure it out in a couple of emails, they will schedule a remote session with a technician.

Using Veeam Backup for AWS

3 - We use Veeam Backup for AWS to provide cross region and cross account backup and recovery capabilities for disaster recovery on our Corporate ERP system. Our System Administrators for this system rely on Veeam Backup for AWS to ensure that in the event of needing to recover data or restore services, we have a dependable solution that is tested and operating 24/7/365.
3 - Currently, after the initial setup of Veeam Backup for AWS we have very little in the way of maintenance required to support it's functionality. All System Administrators receive notifications for completed jobs whether they were successful or not and the details in the reports is more than sufficient to support our operations and give confidence that the system is doing it's job.
  • Cross region and account disaster recovery for our Corporate ERP System
  • Migrating test systems to and from on premise and cloud systems depending on needs.
  • Compliance with disaster recovery and data retention policies
  • Integrates easily with on-premise installs of Veeam so you can access cloud backups easily from one pane of glass.
  • Used Veeam to migrate cloud workloads to on-premise systems to save money.
  • Transferring workloads between AWS and Azure
We have been using Veeam Backup for AWS for our cloud hosted solutions for the last several years and will continue to do so. The ease of use and available support staff make the learning curve for use nearly flat in our case and having Veeam Backup for on-premise workloads makes the decision easy.

Evaluating Veeam Backup for AWS and Competitors

Yes - We were using the N2WS Cloud Protection offering, which was previously part of Veeam, but was split off into it's own company a few years back. Once Veeam had their own offering and we did some initial testing, we were much more enthusiastic about what Veeam's system had to offer.
  • Integration with Other Systems
  • Ease of Use
The single most important factor in our decision to switch from N2WS Cloud Protection to Veeam Backup for AWS, was the integration with the on-premise Veeam Backup and Replication system. This allows for a single pane of glass to see both your cloud and on-premise backups and to restore those in either location.
If we needed to do the evaluation or selection of a cloud backup solution again, we would have probably started with Veeam Backup for AWS at the beginning. When we first needed a solution, Veeam Backup for AWS was not an offering but since we have been using their on-premise solution it would only make the most sense to start the search with Veeam.

Veeam Backup for AWS Support

The support from Veeam for all it's products is AAA+ services. All the staff that have worked with our Team have been responsive and knowledgeable regardless of the issue that we may have. If they cannot resolve the issue in a couple of emails, it appears that they have a standing order to schedule a remote session with the client. Remote sessions make dealing with complex issues very simple and communication very clear.

We have the standard annual support contract for Veeam Backup for AWS and it has been more than sufficient for our needs. The support staff are always extremely responsive and knowledgeable and many times resolve issues on the same day in just an email or two. It has been an excellent experience all around.
We had an issue where some of the backups were failing and causing the health checks to fail repeatedly. When we requested support for the error we joined several remote sessions to get it resolved. Afterwards, an unrelated issue arose and our support engineer open another ticket and continued to help resolve that issue as well. Having one technician cover both with a really exceptional experience since Veeam's engineer had already developed a relationship with our team. We all really appreciated that effort.
