Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication
Our entire server infrastructure is backed up using Veeam Backup & Replication. It provides not only disaster recovery protection for any server VM, but also allows for recovery of individual files or specific data upon request.
Pros
- Non-disruptive VM backups
- File or object-level restores
Cons
- Documentation on PowerShell scripting could be better.
- Streamlined and simplified our backup process, making us more efficient and minimizing tech time spent on the backup process.
- Veeam Backup & Replication has allowed us to avoid disruption during backups, which enlarges maintenance windows and gives us more flexible protection for critical systems.
Our entire VM infrastructure is protected by Veeam Backup & Replication - about 70 servers and 15-20 additional virtual appliances. We also use Veeam Backup & Replication agents to protect a few key physical workstations. We have protected more VMs than we originally anticipated due to the ease of use and lack of disruption when performing backups
We do not use any cloud services.
We have not used this functionality to a great extent, but the related capability to access SQL database backups without performing an online restore is incredibly useful. Extracting specific data or recovering a SQL object without having to restore a terabyte of data is fantastic.
Originally we used Backup Exec to perform backups at the individual server level. This was tedious, and the backups were not good for much beyond file restoration, as full-server restores often failed, and application backups were at best crash-consistent if that.
We implemented vRanger before purchasing Veeam Backup & Replication, but it was not nearly as effective. Any backups caused a noticeable freeze on the running VM, restores were difficult, and backup retention was inefficient. A trusted VAR recommended Veeam Backup & Replication as a replacement. While we were leery of replacing one product we didn't like with a product offering seemingly identical functionality, the similarity is purely superficial. Veeam Backup & Replication is a 100% improvement.
