Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication

Veeam is utilized for us to manage retention-based copies of our critical data sets for on-premise data (file servers, SQL DBs, and whole virtual machines (Windows)). We also utilize it to back O365 data to Azure blob storage. Some data sets are protected multiple times per day if the RPO dictates. Veeam solves compliance retention for our Bank plus allows us to help users who may have an operational impact when data is removed accidentally.
  • Virtualized workloads
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
  • In addition to back up, we also snapshot some of these workloads
  • Enterprise UNIX servers running Solaris & IBM AIX
  • Enterprise applications such as Oracle or SAP HANA
  • Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
  • NAS filers
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • Automating test restores to validate recoverability
  • Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
  • Failover or recovery scripts/plans for orchestrated recovery
  • Automating test restores to validate recoverability
  • Reliable scheduled operations.
  • Easy upgrades to stay current on features.
  • Browsing backups for restores by Helpdesk or non-Admins.
  • Reporting and data analytics in Veeam is poor unless you purchase VeeamONE.
  • Client is thick and might be better if it were web based.

Did Veeam Data Platform live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Veeam Data Platform go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Veeam Data Platform again?

Yes

2 colocation data centers, 200 virtual machines, 15+ critical application-centric backups, and 1 M365 tenant (Exchange, Sharepoint, Teams, OneDrive specifically). Veeam was purchased before M365 and was able to evolve to cover our M365 needs.
  • Allows us to meet compliance requirements.
  • If it failed it would cause impact to ROI.
Veeam was brought on when the Bank embraced virtualization 100% for on-premise workloads (about 7 years ago). The aging solution it replaced was much more difficult to use and represented escalating costs and proprietary hardware requirements. Veeam is a software-based solution with numerous best-of-breed partners and integration for storage. Great hybrid and flexible solution.
We now protect O365 data on Azure blob storage to maintain a continuity copy of O365 data separate from the master copy. This was not possible before using Veeam.
We do not utilize this feature at this time.
Veeam is well suited for Hybrid cloud environments with a mix of on-premise workloads and certain cloud workloads. Excellent for VMware environments. Possibly not as good a fit for 100% cloud environments.
