Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication

We use this to back up our entire virtualized environment and a couple of physical servers. We also move backups to tape and back up testing via Surebackup. We have even used it to do file and email restores. The software takes care of all our nightly backups.
  • Virtualized workloads
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • Capacity Tier to store data within object storage for longer term retention
  • Automating test restores to validate recoverability
  • Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
  • “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
  • Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
  • Seamlessly does backup copies to other storage
  • Easy individual email restores of exchange
  • Easy testing of backups to make sure they are working correctly
  • The SureBackup needs to be able to work using physical server it would run faster
  • Its tape backup is simple, which makes it good, but I could see where it could need more functionality
  • If there was a way to support more hyper-converged environments like HPE SimpliVity
  • The license model is changing from per socket to something else, and that will actually cost us more money in the long run

We are currently backing up about 100 virtual workloads in our environment. We are also backing up two physical servers as well. It is what I expected and needed the product to do. When they first came out, I was looking to back up all my virtual loads back in 2010, and these were the guys to do it.
  • Smaller backup windows
  • Quicker and simpler restores
  • Restores that always work and are not corrupted
So our change was from PHDVirtual back in 2010. It was just not able to really keep up and had performance bottlenecks. At that time, we used Symantec to backup to tape, but Veeam Backup & Replication did the heavy lifting creating the files Symantec needed to backup. Now we do it all with just Veeam Backup & Replication.
We do not currently have anything in the cloud we need to backup. Nor do we store any backups in the cloud at this point. In the near future, 2 to 5 years, I don't see us moving in that direction due to HIPAA and other security considerations. It is easier to stay on-prem.
We do not use this function.
It is a solid product and has been for years. Very mature and hardly ever has any issues. It just works, and it does it well. Considering all the data it has to process, it is actually fairly quick. We can back up all our systems in a small window of time without the systems experiencing any downtimes or outages.
