Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft 365 Used At Midsize Organization
Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft 365
We use Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft 365 to store our Office365 backups which consist of Exchange Online, OneDrive, Teams and all of our SharePoint sites. The backups run once per day but there are times when we either add new sites or do backups manually right after significant changes to Exchange or OneDrive.
Pros
- Backups are reliable, we do test restores on a regular basis and never had a problem
- Backups are of course incremental so they are relatively fast
- After each backup we get an email report showing what was protected
Cons
- While restores are reliable, they are not fast because, in my opinion, MS is usually throttling the restoration of files
- If we had a large amount of data deleted or damaged the restore would take a long time
- The Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft 365 software can't give accurate time to finish numbers because of, in my opinion, the throttling by MS
- Backups give IT staff peace of mind when users do something stupid
- Backups give IT management peace of mind when IT staff do something stupid
- Backups give the business a method to recover from a larger disaster
Having third party software to backup Office365 data is an industry standard simply because Microsoft does not provide its own service. It's simply a requirement and a business takes on enormous risk if there are no backups for data within the tenant.
For the most part our users don't delete data that they shouldn't. This is not an every day or every week thing. I would say that we do a restore perhaps once a month or once a quarter. Again, the exception to this is the SharePoint recycle bin which does keep files deleted for 90 days. If a user deletes something from SharePoint, I tell them to use the recycle bin restore first before doing a restore from Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft 365. Exchange Online and Teams do not have that ability so Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft 365 is used right away if a restore is needed.
Yes we had one situation where we needed to restore to a PST but I will give a thumbs down to the requirement of having an install of Outlook on the Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft 365 server instance in order to do this. Yes, I understand Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft 365 has to use the Outlook DLL files to do the restore to a PST, I just don't like that I have to install Office apps on a server. Yuck
Good features are that the file explorer can show multiple point in time saves and can show what the file or mailbox structure was at that time. This can help when users delete are large amount of data.
Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft 365 just works reliably where as other products are either slower or don't work or the support is off shore. Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft 365 has very good technical support resources.
