Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform

Currently I utilize Veeam Data Platform as a redundant backup system for all physical servers in our environment, and am in the process of shifting our VMWare environment over to it as well. In total, it'll end up handling around 125 servers.

Primarily I'm leveraging it to fill the gaps in our backup systems; previously there was another platform in place, but it was long since defunct by the time I was hired, plus our current VM backup system is going away at the start of the next year.

Ultimately, once the VMs are transitioned, I want to use the redundant server to round out our DR setup.
  • Virtualized workloads
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
  • Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
  • In addition to back up, we also snapshot some of these workloads
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • Capacity Tier to store data within object storage for longer term retention
  • Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
  • Failover or recovery scripts/plans for orchestrated recovery
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • File-level restore is quick, reliable, and much simpler than other platforms I've used
  • Replication is extremely simple to configure and test
  • Agent setup for user endpoints and subsequent backup storage is incredibly simple
  • Cloud repository configuration is extremely straightforward and well-documented
  • My main gripe with Veeam Data Platform was resolved with the release of 12, which was cloud backup repository addition being extremely restricted in 11

Yes

Did Veeam Data Platform live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Veeam Data Platform go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Veeam Data Platform again?

Yes

Currently we have two virtualized workloads and one physical workload protected by Veeam Data Platform. This is definitely less than I anticipated initially, but it's through no fault of the platform. Primarily it's a shortcoming of our own systems at fault, which I'm working to remedy. As soon as that happens, I will be upping that to ten virtualized workloads.
  • Veeam Data Platform has made running an onsite DR system possible for my organization
  • It has been the sole reason we could recover business-critical files that were accidentally deleted or corrupted
  • It has also provided us a secure, compliant way to make a full-disk backup of physical endpoints in the case of legal holds or system transfers
Our previous backup platform ceased to function at some point before I was hired, so we had nothing protecting physical systems in our environment. We had someone delete a handful of files from that server that were completely unrecoverable as a result, plus that same server was starting to have hard drive issues.

After configuring Veeam Data Platform in the environment, I've repeatedly proved its necessity through repeated file restores and (so far) one full disk restore for a critical user after a hardware failure.
I currently use Wasabi cloud storage to ensure that our backups are both resilient and immutable. This has allowed us to keep several compliance ratings as well as create our onsite DR infrastructure without worry about a hardware failure creating significant issues outside of the window of a drive swap.
We currently do not leverage any of the NAS backup technology, simply because all of our file systems are structured and already included or will be included in the agent-based and vCenter-based backups.
I primarily have experience with Veeam Data Platform at a medium scale, so midsize businesses and MSPs. I feel like Veeam Data Platform is extremely well-suited for creating a local backup or DR system for a smaller business that can't necessarily afford to host everything in the cloud, but can also potentially support onsite storage with a cloud repository to better make things immutable and resilient.
