Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform

We use the Veeam Data Platform as a backup, recovery and resiliency tool for our on premise physical servers and VMWare virtualised infrastructure. Veeam Data Platform also provides replication of core LoB servers and data to multiple production hosts and to off site Disaster recovery locations. Veeam Data Platform ensures our on premise data is protected and readily available in the event of a disaster. Our use of the platform currently ends with our on premise infrastructure. Our cloud and M365 data is backed up via other means.

Pros

  • Intuitive software makes administration as simple as possible for such a complex product. Creating and managing backups can be a swift process at the basic level.
  • Managing multiple servers and locations is enhanced with Enterprise Manager. Keeping the server and backup inventory in one location is manageable.
  • The flexibility of what to backup, how to back it up and where to back it up to is second to none. the ability to add storage targets, offsite locations and cloud locations is straight forward.

Cons

  • The cloud backup application adds too much complexity to the backup of cloud assets, particularly in Azure and doesn't add enough to the standard Azure Backup centre. Particularly when the cost is considered.
  • The M365 / Entra backup tools are early in their lifespan and not as well developed and feature rich as some other products on the market.
  • The core application consists of lots of components. The upgrade process is simple enough but can be time consuming. Particularly if there are elements of the product that aren't actually required.
  • Virtualized workloads
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • NAS filers
  • In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
  • Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
  • Capacity Tier to store data within object storage for longer term retention
  • License portability as your environment needs change
  • Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
  • Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
We are not protecting any cloud workloads. We protect our on prem phyiscal and virtual workloads. This is done by a combination of VM backups, agent backups and file level backups. It was always our intention to backup the entire on premise infrastructure with Veeam Data Platform, so the number of workloads we backed up only increased as we grew or we added new on prem services. The total count or protected workloads has decreased as we have moved services to SaaS providers or to the cloud.
  • It's very hard to quantify this kind of thing. The ROI is the peace of mind knowing Veeam Data Platform is an excellent solution. Restoring backups in production is only needed if something has gone wrong!
  • It is certainly a time saver from an administrative perspective. Once configured, the daily admin of the product is minimal and the time to restore is very efficient (subject to the size of data being recovered).
  • The majority of the business do not know Veeam Data Platform is even there. It silently protects the business, which is what we truly want from a backup and recovery tool.
Veeam Data Platform was already in place when I joined the business. I was relieved to see it in place having used the platform in a previous job role where I had been part of the team bringing the tool in. With Veeam Data Platform being a mature and well known product I can only say that when I joined the business, seeing the product already in place gave me peace of mind that one element of the infrastructure at least was well cared for.
We do not use the Veeam Data Platform for any kind of cloud backup. We do not backup cloud workloads with Veeam Data Platform, nor do we backup on prem workloads to the cloud.
We largely backup file shares at machine level and some specifically at file and folder level. We don't use the specific NAS / file share backup tools.
For the on-prem workloads Veeam Data Platform is a far superior product in terms of deployment options, flexibility, managability and scalability. It's mature and well developed features make it a no-brainer in this scenario.

For the cloud workloads we found Veeam Data Platform a little lacking compared to AvePoint and that it added unnecessary levels of complexity and costs compared to Azure native backup. However, this is likely because or cloud infrastructure is basic and in its early days and as this matures and develops the use case for Veeam Data Platform may come into focus.

Do you think Veeam Data Platform delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Veeam Data Platform's feature set?

Yes

Did Veeam Data Platform live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Veeam Data Platform go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Veeam Data Platform again?

Yes

It would be very well suited to purely on premise or hybrid infrastructures, as well as for setups across multiple locations and perhaps using a multi-cloud approach or geo-separated storage, e.g. blobs and archives. I guess the best way to put it is the more complex a business' infrastructure is, the more Veeam Data Platform comes into play. For basic cloud deployments other tools might be a little simpler and less feature rich, but more easily able to complete the job due to the more basic requirements.
