Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform
We use Veeam as our primary backup solution to back up VMs, SMB shares, and specific workstations. Recently, we have moved to Nutanix AHV while still using our old VMware system. Veeam has been able to be used for both making backup mgmt seamless and easy to administer, particularly for our cloud backups.
Pros
- AHV integration.
- Backup object mgmt.
- Application-level integration.
Cons
- Job scheduling options.
- A free version for AHV.
- Multi host backup in one job.
- Virtualized workloads
- Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
- Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
- NAS filers
- Enterprise UNIX servers running Solaris & IBM AIX
- Enterprise applications such as Oracle or SAP HANA
- In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
- In addition to back up, we also snapshot some of these workloads
- Utilizing backup copies for secondary purposes via DataLabs
- Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
- “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
- Failover or recovery scripts/plans for orchestrated recovery
- Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
We have 140 VMs, and by far, that is our primary use case. We back up specific items, such as SMB shares and VHDs, but our primary use case is for VMs. When we first got the product, this is what we expected, and it fulfilled its purpose. That being said, we would later add cloud storage into the mix, and it was surprisingly painless.
- Solid Backups.
- Imutablity
- Costs A LOT.
Our EMR system failed, and I was a new employee; we had no working backups. It was just insane. I really stressed to my superiors the urgency of needing these additions. This secured the cost approval, and the work would proceed quickly. From there, we also got cloud backups, and here we are.
We do, using our local vendor's private cloud, and now have weekly backups offsite, protected with encryption and immutability. Veeam made this impressively easy to set up, though trusts through our AD did pose a challenge. That being said, once it's set up, it's great. I would highly recommend.
Largely, we use smb from Windows servers. So it's not exactly a traditional NAS per se. We very much use file share backups and versioning. Those two features have been a godsend to us. File version for the share, folder, the files, etc, it's all very useful. Nothing like getting the files back for worried people.
AWS is, in my opinion, the best giant cloud provider as it's kinda the company that set the terminology. Given the truly vast amount of functionality it offers, it's clear that using the proprietary option for backing up buckets and containers is AWS Backup. Veeam cannot fully copy these jobs simply because they are on AWS and plug into AWS.
