Overall Satisfaction with Wireshark

Wireshark is an incredible problem solving tool. It allows us to see inside of the network to the actual data being transmitted and received from various devices. There is nothing like it that is as quick and easy to use. Often times in troubleshooting networks it's impossible to tell what is actually happening behind the wires and Wireshark gives you that visibility you need.
  • Realtime network data visibility
  • TCP/IP Packet inspection
  • Wired/Wireless network troubleshooting
  • Fairly straightforward, but not the simplest program to use
  • You do bounce around between windows and clicking various buttons for starting and stopping. While the interface is good, it could be streamlined somewhat
  • Easy to implement
  • Cost (It's free for our use)
  • Complex and simple all at the same time - it has all the features you will need
  • For us, Wireshark is free so no ROI. However, it's valuable enough that I would pay for it.
  • Because it is free and easy to implement, it's a no-brainer to use.
Most firewall devices have some degree of troubleshooting built in but they don't give you actual deep packet inspection in realtime as data flows. Because of the ease of implementation and the cost, Wireshark is a solid solid solution that anyone can use and will help solve network problems quickly.

Wireshark is a must-have tool for an IT manager, engineer, support specialist, etc. If you manage a network, you will, at some point, run into an issue where you need to see what is actually happening inside those packets. Wireshark gives you that opportunity and will be amazingly helpful at reaching a solution.
