Adobe Captivate

Captivate is a great tool for creating content from scratch intended for use in responsive design. This is one of my go-to tools when this particular scenario exists. Captivate's responsive design option and the wide range of tools make the application an amazing option for mobile design. Despite having a PowerPoint import and conversion option, Captivate is NOT the tool to use when starting with content created in PowerPoint. Slides are imported as a single image, removing animations and any ability to edit the content.

Edsby

Edsby is well-suited for day-to-day communication with students, either in the classroom, or at home. It makes planning course progression easier because of the built in day-by-day calendar for the semester. It is transferable, so the work one does in one semester can be copied over to the next, and modified as needed. Students can see the Lesson Plan which is projected onto the SmartBoard, but the font is quite small so they cannot read it from where they are sitting, so I use SmartNotes which has a larger font and then, if needed, attach that note to the Edsby day lesson planner.

Pros

  • Adobe Captivate is a full-featured authoring tool, offering users a wide range of interactive and educational tools. Adobe Pro applications excel at providing you most of the options that you want and more than you need.
  • Captivate offers live authoring in responsive design. This feature is essential as we look to develop more content for use across mobile devices.
  • Captivate integrates seamlessly with the other Adobe Creative Suite tools that we use. We combine PhotoShop, Acrobat, and Captivate to create some amazing learning tools.

  • Students love the "social media" feel to Edsby.

Cons

  • Adobe Captivate has some limitations in how dialog boxes and text frames work. This restricts the creativity of my team.
  • It would be nice to have an automatic voice to text feature to turn the narration into closed captioning.

  • Edsby could make the sorting and collecting of information such as attendance easier.
  • Enhancements to the messaging system are needed - sorting into folders, searching, etc.

There is no doubt in my mind that we will be using Adobe Captivate for years to come. There are so many uses for the software that we are just scratching the surface. The more we use it, the better it gets. This is a great option for anyone looking for an eLearning authoring tool.

Usability

Adobe Captivate does take some getting used to. There are features that are much more convoluted than they need to be, but overall it is a great product with a some excellent features. Being in a pretty small market, Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline dominate the space. They are not the same software, but allow for eLearning authoring. Each has their benefit and their downside, but, for me, Adobe Captivate edges out Storyline.

Support

The support team is good in responding and maintaining communication. Sometimes...well...almost always, you will find yourself having to use a 2nd attempt with more details and easier terminology to get the tech to understand the question or situation. These techs should know English 100% and their product 100% to be on a support team for the USA. I do not get the impression this is true.

Alternatives Considered

As I mentioned before, I've used Adobe Captivate for a long time. I've used other authoring tools, but always come back to Adobe Captivate to do my heavy lifting. Perhaps, I'm just more comfortable with Adobe Captivate and always am surprised at what I can do with it. Camtasia works well with my video, but Adobe Captivate can do it all.

EDSBY was piloted at the school last semester, and I found it made my job easier, which is a boon since time is fleeting and I could get more done with less effort with Edsby. After the pilot the entire school district was signed up to use Edsby. I like it very much. I did use a blog on First Class which was extremely difficult to learn, and a blog on WordPress which was easier to learn how to use but not interactive like Edsby is. To my mind, Edsby is far superior to the former.

Return on Investment

  • I believe that it's had a generally positive effect, but that's mostly based on anecdotal info, "Level 1" evaluation, and some non-quantitative "Level 3" information from supervisors/managers, as we don't generally do "Level 4" or "Level 5" measurement of our e-courses.

  • For the most part, teachers, parents and students love the system. It provides easy access to the information that they need when they need it.
