Adobe Captivate

Captivate is leading the pack with this software solution. While Adobe has owned it for a few years now, Macromedia had already built an amazing tool. Captivate will provide you solutions for training internal staff as well as customers. It is so much easier to quickly record a short tutorial and send it out to your staff to watch at their own pace, than to host a classroom of people that are all learning at different speeds...the slower bunch taking more time and frustrating the faster bunch. With Captivate, I can create any type of video I want and add music, or background audio, or speech to it along with sound effects. Great solution!

Pros

  • Adobe Captivate can integrate current PowerPoint presentation, and transform them into eLearning curriculum.
  • Publishing an Adobe Captivate project is simple.
  • Adobe Captivate uses built-in interactions to engage the learner, making the content easier to remember.

  • It perfectly suits the need to train staff at distant offices at a reasonable price.
  • Due to 24/7 access people can easily learn whatever they want from wherever they want.
  • The Eduson LMS is very easy to use.

Cons

  • I wanted Captivate to be a little bit more intuitive. This may take away from the endless ability to customize; however, it would make things easier if you wanted it.
  • Creating interactions could be a little easier. You have to make sure that every tiny detail of the interaction is timed and entered perfectly for the interaction to work.
  • Some ready-made templates that are easy to manipulate and computer voice-over would be nice. Perhaps that functionality is available now, but it was not in the version we had earlier this year.

  • I like the way Eduson.tv is developing, and I believe they should keep on moving in this direction: making more courses, eLearning tools and tests for personnel assessment.

There is no doubt in my mind that we will be using Adobe Captivate for years to come. There are so many uses for the software that we are just scratching the surface. The more we use it, the better it gets. This is a great option for anyone looking for an eLearning authoring tool.

Usability

Adobe Captivate8.0
Based on 2 answers
Adobe Captivate does take some getting used to. There are features that are much more convoluted than they need to be, but overall it is a great product with a some excellent features. Being in a pretty small market, Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline dominate the space. They are not the same software, but allow for eLearning authoring. Each has their benefit and their downside, but, for me, Adobe Captivate edges out Storyline.

The support team is good in responding and maintaining communication. Sometimes...well...almost always, you will find yourself having to use a 2nd attempt with more details and easier terminology to get the tech to understand the question or situation. These techs should know English 100% and their product 100% to be on a support team for the USA. I do not get the impression this is true.

Alternatives Considered

I prefer Articulate 360 over Adobe Captivate. While Captivate does have more features overall, Articulate 360 is much easier to navigate and nice, clean courses can be created in a fraction of the time.

Return on Investment

  • Captivate has helped us create online courses that teach our faculty how to teach online courses.
  • Captivate has helped our students learn how to complete assignments and use tools inside of our LMS.
Jonathan Sorrenti profile photo
  • Eduson.tv helped us to increase overall ROI of our L&D department. The price of the LMS and the library of courses is way less than costs associated with the similar volume of instructor-led training.
