Adobe Captivate

Captivate is a great tool for creating content from scratch intended for use in responsive design. This is one of my go-to tools when this particular scenario exists. Captivate's responsive design option and the wide range of tools make the application an amazing option for mobile design. Despite having a PowerPoint import and conversion option, Captivate is NOT the tool to use when starting with content created in PowerPoint. Slides are imported as a single image, removing animations and any ability to edit the content.

LinkedIn Learning (Lynda.com)

Lynda.com is an easy way to get online tutorials about a spectrum of different topics. If you want flexibility in your learning, Lynda.com might perfect for you, because you can take it on the go and use it anywhere with internet access. That said, you need to have the self-discipline to sit down and do the courses. If you are not a good audio learner and require more hands-on learning, then Lynda might not be the software for you.

Pros

  • I love the Text-to-Speech feature in Adobe Captivate. I use to record all of the audio manually, which was time-consuming to say the least. Now, I can easily convert text to speech before I submit the project which gives users, SMEs and other stakeholders a good idea how the finished project will look and sound.
  • Pan and Zoom is another feature that I like to use in Adobe Captivate. When creating application simulations, this feature allows you to pan to an area or zoom in on specific areas to bring more clarity to the end user.
  • I love Adobe Captivate Interactions. Every time I'm faced with a project, I try to think of how to use one. I use interactions to create quizzes, graphs, or whenever I need to another level of engagement.
  • The latest version of Adobe Captivate makes it easy to publish content for mobile and desktop users. I love how professional my projects look as a result.

  • Variety: the lynda.com library is enormous. In fact, it can be a little overwhelming when you sit down and search.
  • Depth: lynda.com training videos are very detailed.
  • High quality: videos are delivered by knowledgeable experts who have great screen presence.

Cons

  • It drives me crazy that the caption text doesn't automatically put a period at the end...I always have to end up going into each and every one to add that darned period!
  • The caption boxes aren't as slick looking as they should be nowadays, and the ability to customize them isn't quite as robust as I'd like.
  • Getting live tech support is exceedingly expensive and Adobe has the worst, most frustrating website (which is ironic, considering the products that they sell). Adobe has many very good products, but they're not a company I enjoy doing business with.

  • Lynda.com can be overwhelming at times and the resources are not always organized in a conducive manner for learning.
  • I think there is room for additional courses on certain topics like how to use statistical packages such as R, Stata, SAS.

There is no doubt in my mind that we will be using Adobe Captivate for years to come. There are so many uses for the software that we are just scratching the surface. The more we use it, the better it gets. This is a great option for anyone looking for an eLearning authoring tool.

Usability

Adobe Captivate does take some getting used to. There are features that are much more convoluted than they need to be, but overall it is a great product with a some excellent features. Being in a pretty small market, Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline dominate the space. They are not the same software, but allow for eLearning authoring. Each has their benefit and their downside, but, for me, Adobe Captivate edges out Storyline.

Lynda.com is very simple to use, from finding videos to watching to going back and finding the chapter you want to re-watch. Love it all!

Support

The support team is good in responding and maintaining communication. Sometimes...well...almost always, you will find yourself having to use a 2nd attempt with more details and easier terminology to get the tech to understand the question or situation. These techs should know English 100% and their product 100% to be on a support team for the USA. I do not get the impression this is true.

Alternatives Considered

Although Articulate Storyline is more user friendly, Adobe Captivate has more functionality and options to choose from when designing an eLearning course. Articulate Storyline's interface is similar to Microsoft PowerPoint, so if you have experience with that program, Storyline should come as a Breeze. However, you are limited by all of the things you may wish to do when creating your eLearning course, which is why we chose Captivate instead.

Return on Investment

  • It takes a lot of time to learn how to use Adobe Captivate, so we have spent a lot of time for training before using it.
  • Projects made with Adobe Captivate are taking much longer to edit and have left us less time for other tasks.
  • Because Adobe Captivate is not that user-friendly, we have lost a lot of time to get back into the habit of using it because we don't use it every day.

  • It allows us to train staff on new technologies and offer that knowledge to our customers. Especially the newest, hard ones to find.
  • Our staff learns new skills and they apply them to their current projects, it's translated into more value, improved development speed, and better code quality.
  • Administrative staff learns vital skills and abilities to do their job better.
