Adobe Captivate

Captivate is a great tool for creating content from scratch intended for use in responsive design. This is one of my go-to tools when this particular scenario exists. Captivate's responsive design option and the wide range of tools make the application an amazing option for mobile design. Despite having a PowerPoint import and conversion option, Captivate is NOT the tool to use when starting with content created in PowerPoint. Slides are imported as a single image, removing animations and any ability to edit the content.

Prezi

To date, it does not feel as professional as some of the competitors. For instance, I use Prezi in my undergraduate classroom but not in my graduate classroom. That said, I have used it for research presentations at conferences and the audience always enjoys it. It's a nice change of pace from the status quo - but again, must be done well, with consideration for the viewers.

Pros

  • Adobe Captivate is a full-featured authoring tool, offering users a wide range of interactive and educational tools. Adobe Pro applications excel at providing you most of the options that you want and more than you need.
  • Captivate offers live authoring in responsive design. This feature is essential as we look to develop more content for use across mobile devices.
  • Captivate integrates seamlessly with the other Adobe Creative Suite tools that we use. We combine PhotoShop, Acrobat, and Captivate to create some amazing learning tools.

  • Prezi allows a user to move around the slides easily, as well as copy content, add slides, & duplicate presentations.
  • Prezi also has a large variety of templates and settings to adjust a design in order to fit each user's specific need.
  • Prezi's movement between slides creates a more innovative and stylistic presentation.

Cons

  • While Captivate does an amazing job at recording movement of mouse and keystrokes on the screen, it would be great to have the ability to capture the same items via a plugin to 3rd party software (Outlook, Firefox, or other Adobe applications). The results would be that while working in another application and realizing that someone might want a quick tutorial on something, rather than launching Captivate, one could use the plugin to quickly capture the screen and mouse movement.
  • Configuring the LMS to have quizzes at the end and have a passing score could use an enhancement. While it works great, it is not the most straight-forward setup there is. One finds themselves searching online for solutions and answers how to accomplish certain setup steps for LMS or SCORM.
  • It would be nice to be able to have the control of Captivate on a 2nd or 3rd monitor that is not being captured, to be able to see more of the real estate of your screen that you are capturing.

  • Prezi has a very limited number of fonts as well as font sizes.
  • Prezi's presentation board can feel crowded after adding many slides. It's also not always clear about the order of the slides when looking at the presentation board, only when looking at the list of slides on the left hand side of the screen. Maybe the slides should have automatic numbering that are not visible when presenting, only when creating the Prezi.
  • Once a template has been changed, it is very difficult, if even possible at all, to return to the original settings of the template. If it is a completed Prezi, this can be extremely frustrating to try to fix.
  • It's also confusing that when you first sign in, it automatically opens to Prezi Next so if you have only created presentations in Prezi Classic, there's this moment of panic when you wonder where all of your presentations have gone.

We are all in with Adobe products as creative tools, but are leaning more and more on Articulate for course development. It is likely that Captivate will continue to be a tool in our belt even if it isn't our immediate go to

Usability

Adobe Captivate8.0

Adobe Captivate does take some getting used to. There are features that are much more convoluted than they need to be, but overall it is a great product with a some excellent features. Being in a pretty small market, Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline dominate the space. They are not the same software, but allow for eLearning authoring. Each has their benefit and their downside, but, for me, Adobe Captivate edges out Storyline.

Support

The support team is good in responding and maintaining communication. Sometimes...well...almost always, you will find yourself having to use a 2nd attempt with more details and easier terminology to get the tech to understand the question or situation. These techs should know English 100% and their product 100% to be on a support team for the USA. I do not get the impression this is true.

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Captivate is an okay software program, but it is not something I'd pick over Articulate Storyline or Articulate 360. I only selected Captivate because it was mandatory for my course plus I wanted to explore it to find out how it worked. But after using it, I didn't find it to be as appealing as I thought. It's not a horrible software tool, it has its perks but it's just not as user-friendly as I'd hoped it would be.

Return on Investment

  • I used Captivate as a student in graduate school and I would say that I am not planning to upgrade my student registration when it's over next year.

  • result of insured customer satisfaction
  • greater ease in showing multiple amounts of information
  • development time of a slightly longer presentation than a classic power point
