Likelihood to Recommend

Adobe Captivate

It is well suited for developing training for the web using HTML5 or Flash, especially if you want to use responsive or advanced features and capabilities. Highly recommended if you want customization, branching, variables, green screen, 360 degrees, and other advanced features. Integrates with SCORM, xAPI, etc. Other competitors are easier and more intuitive but less powerful. If you want the easiest no-frills development that is as fast to develop as possible, then look at competitors.

Prezi

When you have to present complex hierarchical structures, and if your audience would require navigation in and out of the hierarchy, then Prezi is a good candidate for you. But be prepared, Prezi is not as intuitive as a standard presentation tool, and it may take some time to get used to.

Pros

Adobe Captivate

  • Quickly adding in graphics, text, and interactive buttons.
  • Has extensive variables and branching for additional customization, beyond the competition.
  • Has 360 degree capability which competitors don't offer (I have not used this feature).
  • High degree of customization and personalization.
  • True responsive screen display on all devices, viewable as you are creating the training. This is different than some competitors - some just shrink the screen, but Adobe Captivate allows actually removing or moving or changing items at different screen sizes.
  • If you like Flash, it has Flash output, although it's going away in 2020. Personally, I think this is an outdated technology.
  • Many advanced capabilities. I chose this product due to the capabilities.
  • Comes with assets, templates, people, head shots, and full body—excellent.
  • Adobe Captivate is the authoring tool. It integrates with Adobe Captivate Prime - which I highly recommend if you want to truly take advantage of all of its features in reporting, administration, compliance, and social learning. (I didn't use Prime because you essentially need 100+ students to affordably use Prime.) If you look at my chart of what Captivate is capable of, I can't say that Captivate has a lot of the reporting features because they are part of Prime/SCORM, although, with Captivate's customization, you might be able to do most of them if you are up to it, but I did not.

Prezi

  • Drilling down is easy. Just design carefully and you should be able to navigate easily in and out of complex hierarchies.
  • The stand-alone presentation functionality is a plus. You can download the playable version of your file and use it offline whenever you need.
  • Many samples are available from the community, in different categories to help you gain experience quickly.

Cons

Adobe Captivate

  • While Captivate does an amazing job at recording movement of mouse and keystrokes on the screen, it would be great to have the ability to capture the same items via a plugin to 3rd party software (Outlook, Firefox, or other Adobe applications). The results would be that while working in another application and realizing that someone might want a quick tutorial on something, rather than launching Captivate, one could use the plugin to quickly capture the screen and mouse movement.
  • Configuring the LMS to have quizzes at the end and have a passing score could use an enhancement. While it works great, it is not the most straight-forward setup there is. One finds themselves searching online for solutions and answers how to accomplish certain setup steps for LMS or SCORM.
  • It would be nice to be able to have the control of Captivate on a 2nd or 3rd monitor that is not being captured, to be able to see more of the real estate of your screen that you are capturing.

Prezi

  • Advanced design is not easy for standard users. You should have some understanding of layers, hierarchy design, etc.
  • We encountered some difficulties in editing. Sometimes you can not select very close frames, or you may create new objects accidentally.
  • We experienced some color transition issues. The screen flickered with red while transitioning between some objects.

There is no doubt in my mind that we will be using Adobe Captivate for years to come. There are so many uses for the software that we are just scratching the surface. The more we use it, the better it gets. This is a great option for anyone looking for an eLearning authoring tool.

Usability

Adobe Captivate

Adobe Captivate does take some getting used to. There are features that are much more convoluted than they need to be, but overall it is a great product with a some excellent features. Being in a pretty small market, Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline dominate the space. They are not the same software, but allow for eLearning authoring. Each has their benefit and their downside, but, for me, Adobe Captivate edges out Storyline.

Support

The support team is good in responding and maintaining communication. Sometimes...well...almost always, you will find yourself having to use a 2nd attempt with more details and easier terminology to get the tech to understand the question or situation. These techs should know English 100% and their product 100% to be on a support team for the USA. I do not get the impression this is true.

There were free samples that you can check for your presentation. Other than that, we did not encounter issues requiring further support

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Captivate

Adobe Captivate is an okay software program, but it is not something I'd pick over Articulate Storyline or Articulate 360. I only selected Captivate because it was mandatory for my course plus I wanted to explore it to find out how it worked. But after using it, I didn't find it to be as appealing as I thought. It's not a horrible software tool, it has its perks but it's just not as user-friendly as I'd hoped it would be.

Prezi

We also tried Powerpoint and Visio to prepare hierarchical presentations, but it was not as easy, and it was kind of difficult to edit. Prezi provided built-in zoom-pan animation, which made it easier. Also, there were many samples from the Prezi community that one could learn from. Finally, Prezi Classic was free and there was not any limitation in using the free version.

Return on Investment

Adobe Captivate

  • Less travel expense.
  • More access to training courses, more impact on the frontline.
  • Only $29.99 a month, it can be used when necessary, keeping overall cost low.

Prezi

  • Prezi normally give us the chance to generate a higher positive impact during specific presentations, but it is something hard to measure.
  • Prezi is also interesting for explaining specific subjects such as flows and processes, in a more attractive and effective way. It means more engagement of the audience, a better understanding and a lower learning curve to save time.
  • However, to prepare an engaging and more sophisticated presentation, Prezi naturally demands more time and creativity from the author, when compared to other similiar tools.
