Adobe Experience Manager

Adobe is an enterprise level software that is best suited for large amounts of web content. The entire web management experience is engineered around the author. It is a large solution with many capabilities readily available to you out of the box.

NVU

NVU is an easy self explanatory program that helps us edit the Landing Pages for the company for which I work. However, many of the features of being able to edit text & text boxes is out of date & very jumpy. I often have to rewrite sentences in order to fit better on a line because I can't adjust the text box without it messing up the entire Landing Page.

Pros

  • Adobe Experience Manager allows our company to manage multiple sites simultaneously.
  • Adobe Experience Manager make it easy to share review sites for necessary sign-offs.
  • Adobe Experience Manager is a flexible resource and can always be what you make of it.

  • It allows me to easily create the Landing Pages for my company. I can easily create a copy of an NVU file & then rename it in order to create a new file. Then once I've made the necessary changes to the new file, I just drag & drop the new file into our backend to automatically upload to our site.
  • It allows me to edit text fairly easily. I can drag & drop the text within a text box.

Cons

  • User interface can be buggy at times.
  • The touch interface can be confusing and/or unintuitive.
  • Cost. AEM by itself is good, but needs some additional services (Analytics, Target) to really make it more effective.

  • I can't widen a text box without it jumping & messing up the entire Landing Page.
  • I can't drag text from one text box into another.
  • The text settings change if I don't copy a word that already exists in a word box & paste it into the new line of text before starting to type a new sentence.
  • Sometimes I try to open a Landing Page to edit it & it says that NVU is unavailable & I have to close the program & try again.

Adobe CQ has training classes that you can be in or watch to get a better understanding. They have some of the best customer support so if you run into any problems you can just contact them put a ticket in and they will fix it or work with you to fix the problem or issue you are running into.

Usability

I personally feel that AEM is very intuitive to use from an authoring standpoint. The entire CMS was engineered around the author. Everything about AEM is geared to helping authors generate and maintain content. There are ways that tool tips can be customized so that any individual could simply hover over and be guided step by step on how to author web content

Implementation

Depending on your individual needs, It is really quite simple to create an authoring experience for a website that looks really good. I have been part of many implementations and many teams and have seen many projects that were super successful and others that were not implemented well. AEM has room for a lot of flexibility in the implementation process compared to other CMS like SharePoint

Alternatives Considered

Have used a handful of other content management systems, all of which tend to be either proprietary or freeware -- and the latter presents a security issue. Adobe Experience Manager is easily the most feature-rich content management system I have used, but more features sometimes comes with inconveniences -- taking longer to load when accessing remotely (times out on slow Internet connections), slower taxonomy tagging, etc. It is also the most well-supported system I have used; Adobe is more responsive than most if glitches happen or in response to changes in Google practices for SEO, etc

Return on Investment

  • Positive: Can quickly create and launch marketing campaigns.
  • Negative: Can be expensive to develop custom AEM experiences.

  • I think my boss has actually decided to stop using NVU to create & edit our webpages because of it's lack of updates & features for editing text.
  • It takes me a lot of time trying to adjust text boxes to get them to fit on the Landing Page correctly with the entire desired content.
