Adobe Experience Manager

AEM is suited for enterprise-level businesses to easily author, publish, and manage websites. There are many powerful features that allow businesses to author, publish, develop, implement workflows, manage assets, launch marketing campaigns, and integrate an e-commerce platform, all in a central location.AEM is less suited for small to medium sized businesses simply because of the cost and initial setup time. Out of the box, it isn't very useful and will need to be heavily customized to the business's needs. It also requires users who already have AEM experience or they will need to be trained.

If you want to share (or access) the most current version of any content MediaBin can be useful for ensuring that you are getting the right thing - assuming you can find it. Another useful functionality - OS sharing or exporting different file formats for a file. Often PDF works, but sometimes you need a file in a different image format and the software can allow that.

Pros

  • Easy for authors to use

  • Scalable

  • Help reduce email clutter as a central repository
  • Help with version control

Cons

  • In Touch UI interface the authoring dialogue can not be expanded which prompts the user to scroll when authoring and makes it a cumbersome user experience.
  • Moving the page hierarchy within AEM structure is not intuitive.
  • Re-sizing of the assets often does not work as expected and the user needs to refresh the page before they see the final outcome.

  • Search is often a chellenge - using the file name or "item number" doesn't always bring up the expected results.
  • Navigation is not intuitive in places - finding different functions
  • The export function is powerful but not always clear, several options seem like the same thing. e.g. Do I need FTP ot HTTP download? Do I care?

I'll continue to use this product for many years. Adobe is making it clear they are taking customer feedback seriously and there continues to be growing demand for Adobe CQ implementations. As a developer, I find that there is still lots of room in this platform to try new techniques and really keep our implementations up to par with the latest standards.

Usability

I personally feel that AEM is very intuitive to use from an authoring standpoint. The entire CMS was engineered around the author. Everything about AEM is geared to helping authors generate and maintain content. There are ways that tool tips can be customized so that any individual could simply hover over and be guided step by step on how to author web content

Implementation

Depending on your individual needs, It is really quite simple to create an authoring experience for a website that looks really good. I have been part of many implementations and many teams and have seen many projects that were super successful and others that were not implemented well. AEM has room for a lot of flexibility in the implementation process compared to other CMS like SharePoint

Alternatives Considered

Websphere is antiquated

I was not involved in the selection process but MediaBin seems to be more of a "repository" than a "file-folder" system. It also displays thumbnail previews of files making it useful for sorting through visual elements, like photos or PDFs. I am not certain how it compares with regard to version history.

Return on Investment

  • Increase employee efficiency
  • Complete control of content by marketing team
  • Great user experience
Nadia Sweeting, MS profile photo
  • This software is more of a tool that resides in the background, so it is difficult to measure ROI.
  • One negative impact is the challenges of managing access and thus limiting productivity when people can't access things.
  • Another negative impact is the poor search functionality reducing productivity in finding the correct files when needed.
