Adobe Experience Manager

If you have a number of smaller parts of your organization that you want to maintain the same look & feel as the rest of the organization, it is easy to create a base site and then let them customize. Also, if you have contributors of content who are not involved in the web site maintenance - our professors, for example - they can enter the text on a basic page which is then incorporated through tagging

Oracle WebCenter Content

WebCenter Content is suitable for payables invoice processing for companies with a huge volume of paper invoices. 80% of data entry effort can be reduced. For small companies with less volume, WebCenter may not make sense. WebCenter is not perfect. It has some issues. We raised enhancement requests with Oracle, hopefully, Oracle will resolve them soon.

Pros

  • Media library and asset management is simplified, separating storage and also allowing developers to manage the workflow of the publishing process.
  • No addition of API services are required, using the same requests and data access layer for both front end and back end development simplifies the project lifecycle.
  • Duplicating code is easy, developers can simply copy components and reuse or rework for each use case.

  • WebCenter Content's biggest strength is its robust content repository
  • WebCenter Content provides SOAP and JSON web service APIs for integration with third-party and custom tools
  • WebCenter Content has very strong yet flexible access control and security
  • WebCenter Content has very powerful, customizable workflows to accommodate any organizational authoring, editing, and approval structure
  • WebCenter Content provides excellent tools for development, staging, and production authoring/developing, testing, and publication
  • Metadata for content stored and managed in WebCenter Content is fully customizable so custom rules can be created to store, retrieve, and manipulate content individually or in batch.
  • WebCenter Content is fast and scales very well for optimal performance.

Cons

  • There is no easy way to change a template if it has been built a certain way. Sometimes it would be nice to have an option to add an extra item on the spot. Instead, you have to ask your IT team to create for you.
  • You can set up a staging site and a site to publish... but sometimes the 2 environments doesn't connect correctly, meaning some changes in the staging sites doesn't show of on the live site.
  • The quick publish button is dangerous and not that helpful: pages can be published with the "quick publish" option even if they are blocked... however, the purpose of a blocked page is to prevent it from publishing until you unblock it. Also, the "quick publish" option will publish your age and every other page connected to it! so be careful!!

  • Better user experience, especially in SiteStudio, the web development IDE.
  • More modern user interface features such as drag-and-drop web page construction
  • More modern and visually appealing user interface overall
  • A full implementation of WebCenter Content as a managed node in the WebLogic application server to leverage all of WebLogic's capabilities
  • Integration of a web experience/campaign management tool for managing online marketing targeting and personalization

Adobe CQ has training classes that you can be in or watch to get a better understanding. They have some of the best customer support so if you run into any problems you can just contact them put a ticket in and they will fix it or work with you to fix the problem or issue you are running into.

The challenges with converting to a completely new system create quite a barrier to switching to anything else. If we find another system that offers guaranteed improvements to the user interface -- as well as as a more coherent set of options for data interchanges with current and future enterprise data sources -- we would be more interested in swithing to that new product. Of course, the expense in purchasing competitor system, along with the costs of migrating all current content, along with retooling all existing workflows in place, would be carefully weighed against the benefits incurred from a switch-over.

Usability

I personally feel that AEM is very intuitive to use from an authoring standpoint. The entire CMS was engineered around the author. Everything about AEM is geared to helping authors generate and maintain content. There are ways that tool tips can be customized so that any individual could simply hover over and be guided step by step on how to author web content

Implementation

Depending on your individual needs, It is really quite simple to create an authoring experience for a website that looks really good. I have been part of many implementations and many teams and have seen many projects that were super successful and others that were not implemented well. AEM has room for a lot of flexibility in the implementation process compared to other CMS like SharePoint

AEM exceeds WordPress on customizability. It is the backbone for the many modules and APIs we need to run our business.

We were looking for an automated invoice processing solution. As we are already on Oracle ERP, it made sense for us to go for Oracle Fusion payables with Oracle WebCenter Content. We have a good relationship with Oracle and Oracle promised us priority support during the time of implementation.

Return on Investment

  • Difficult to calculate ROI, which would likely only be measured by time savings and improved SEO.
  • Takes time, which lowers productivity, to get up and running smoothly when first adopted.
  • Ensures we're using best practices, including maximizing SEO and more, through check lists and evaluations/ratings.

  • When integrated with a system like Biscom, WebCenter Content makes document capture, retention, and archiving much more efficient and cost-effective.
  • When integrated with a system like Siebel CRM, WebCenter Content makes communications with customers/leads more efficient.
  • Leveraging the robust content authoring capabilities has helped our web clients reduce the amount of involvement required of IT services during the normal course of web content authoring and management.
