Adobe Premiere Pro

Adobe Premiere is perfect for the semi-professional or professional video editor. For our church, we produce weekly sermons for YouTube with embedded graphics, video clips for reference, and music, with Premiere being the only suitable software (on PC) that allows us to accomplish this at a high-quality, professional level. Premiere may also be suitable for individuals new to video editing if they are doing so looking to learn, as Premiere provides plenty of growing room. Casual video editors may be better suited with a less intensive, friendlier video editing software

ilos

ilos is great for a larger group looking for an easy to learn capture system and platform all combined together. Because it lets you record, edit, and share there is no reason to learn one or two software for capture and editing, and another for sharing. ilos is not targeted at intermediate or advanced users, so the ability to manipulate your content - specifically when editing, is very limiting to more experienced users.

Pros

  • Fast, organized editing that handles multiple production levels whether they are involved or simple.
  • Very intuitive user interface which has evolved over the years to really accommodate the needs of modern editing styles.
  • Render times (depending on hardware) are lightning fast which will ensure that we meet deadlines without issue

  • Desktop capture is simple even for first-time users
  • Editing capabilities and focused on only the most common features, avoiding overwhelm or confusion
  • Sharing inside Canvas is simple and intuitive

Cons

  • Sound editing
  • Special effects, so I don't have to use another program
  • Uploading takes forever
No photo available
  • Features are often rolled out before they are fully baked
  • Communication of changes can be limited and frustrating
  • Not all changes feel like improvements, much less necessary

Alternatives Considered

I have learned editing through both Final Cut and Avid but eventually found Premier Pro and settled on it as the only editing software I would ever need. The seamless way it integrates with the rest of the Adobe creative suite is sensationally powerful and time-saving. At this stage in the game I couldn't even fathom switching to something else

It was a tough call to choose ilos over Kaltura, but the more limited features made ilos seem more approachable for novice users. Price was also far lower because of the limited focus of ilos. Kaltura did offer more tools for marketing/public purposes - such as streaming, capture integration, and video portals - but none of those are necessary for us.

Return on Investment

  • It's been positive in improving our training programs. I don't have a specific dollar saving for that.

  • Makes sharing content with students easier for faculty - so they actually make and share videos more than before
  • Students don't have issues viewing, even on limited bandwidth
  • Because you can make a video wherever and whenever you want, creation has increased
