Amazon QuickSight

Amazon QuickSight is well suited in any organization that is making business decisions based on performance data whether it be Marketing, Sales, Call Center, etc. It is a great tool especially for mature organizations that have a lot of data to work with. Amazon QuickSight may be not as well suited for newer organizations that are just beginning to drive data/performance metrics. The data available becomes more and more valuable to more that you have.

SAP Crystal

I'm biased because I've used Crystal for so long and there's very little that I've needed to do that I haven't been able to do with it.I particularly like being able to write my own queries instead of having Crystal write them for me. With this feature, I've been able to do some very complex reports this way. I could have done most of these reports by linking tables together in Crystal and using Crystal's filter and suppression features, but putting the logic in the query means that Crystal is processing less data so the report is faster.Crystal is less suited for showing graphs, unless you just need very simple line or bar graphs. It's also not really suited to doing ad-hoc reporting for most users because it is more technical than some other reporting tools.

Pros

  • Amazon QuickSight is a really easy program to learn how to use.
  • Amazon QuickSight allows our team to customize the data using the various data sets, which makes the available reports incredibly powerful to our organization.
  • Our organization has the ability continually adjust our reports and build new reports as business needs change.
  • Even though our organization has different reports built for different departments, each department can still access and understand reports from across the company.
Megan Sullivan profile photo
  • In addition to linking together tables and views from the database in order to get data into your report, Crystal allows you to write your own SQL queries using an "Command". This feature allows for the use of very complex queries to get data for your reports.
  • Crystal can connect to MANY different types of databases. It has native connections available for a number of them, including Oracle, and will connect to almost anything else using either ODBC or (less common) JDBC.
  • Subreports, when used correctly, are a powerful feature for bringing additional data into a report.
  • There are SDK's available to integrate reporting into either .NET or Java applications and websites.

Cons

  • One of the primary challenges I've had with Amazon QuickSight so far is that some of the reports I want to build use data from different data sets. Instead of being able to put all of the information I want to see into one report.
  • Some of our Amazon QuickSight reports only update every 24 hours. It would be great to see that data in real-time.
  • I would remove the various time zones from Amazon QuickSight and only use the time zone we are in.
Megan Sullivan profile photo
  • It would be nice if there was a way to search your .rpt files for a specific field or table using a normal search engine. There are secondary tools available for purchase but it would be nice if there were a way to do this without additional purchase.
  • When I first started using Crystal Reports the learning curve was steep. That being said I had never used a reporting tool before. I think if you are familiar with reporting tools the learning curve would not be as steep.
  • If you do happen to get an error message they are sometimes very cryptic and require internet searches to figure out what exactly is wrong.

We use what the vendor provides. My choice would be to switch to Cognos because the rest of the organization uses Cognos.

The support community can be difficult to navigate. I've also run into issues with my login. The SAP system has a bizarre mechanism for validating users that requires users to have what is called an S-ID. A basic ID may not give you access to all the features in the portal. The limitation may include not being able to perform a simple task like downloading patches and updates. This isn't a big deal for single user license but for teams it can be a pain.

It is not widely adopted; Crystal Reports is a niche that is allowed to co-exist with the Cognos corporate standard. If it came up for a vote, Crystal Reports would not be adopted.

Alternatives Considered

All of the other reporting platforms my organization has used previously were within our CRM and not a standalone program. In that we were very limited in being able to slice and dice the data the way that we wanted to
Megan Sullivan profile photo
I experimented with SSRS but found that it was geared toward people who want to write code. I also found it hard to recreate my standard report layouts, like invoices, because SSRS is page-based and doesn't really have recurring bands outside of table/grid objects.
I have also created reports within MS Access but found the expression language is much stronger in Crystal. I found no easy way to create running totals.
I have skipped over tools like Cognos Impromptu because they require that you set up a meta data layer before you do anything else.
I have also skipped over visualization tools like Qlik and Tableau because they focus on the visual and don't provide much help creating actual reports.
My web site has an in-depth feature comparison between Crystal Reports and 7 other tools. In most cases I enlisted a specialist in the other tools to review the supported features. You will find a link to the comparison at the very bottom of the main page of my web site.

There are many members across my organization that use the QuickSight reports throughout each business day. There are various reports built for various departments as well as reports that cross over to all departments. There have not been any issues across the various departments with viewing the reports and using unique filters to look at the reports differently. Our IT department is the only department within the organization that has the necessary permissions to create new reports and/or make changes to existing reports

Data Integration

Amazon QuickSight7.5

All of the data that feeds into Amazon QuickSight comes from our CRM, Clarity. We do not have data coming in from any other sources. Some of the data that comes in is in real-time and some of the data only updates every 24 hours. Overall, the API feed of data seems to be very seamless and there have not been any hiccups in the feed.

Crystal can connect to all ODBC or OLEDB data sources. It also provides legacy connectors for connecting directly to older spreadsheets and mdb files, including reading your windows file folders as if they were database tables.
Crystal will also allow you to directly link tables from disparate data sources, although this isn't always an efficient query.

  • It has allowed us to focus over 80 percent of the labor spent in the past on report distribution on other areas of the business.
  • It provides us with a tool to meet all of our internal and external report demands
  • Allows us 24/7/365 ability to get data to users without staffing for these jobs to get done.
