Amazon QuickSight

Amazon QuickSight is well suited in any organization that is making business decisions based on performance data whether it be Marketing, Sales, Call Center, etc. It is a great tool especially for mature organizations that have a lot of data to work with. Amazon QuickSight may be not as well suited for newer organizations that are just beginning to drive data/performance metrics. The data available becomes more and more valuable to more that you have.

SAP Crystal

I'm biased because I've used Crystal for so long and there's very little that I've needed to do that I haven't been able to do with it.I particularly like being able to write my own queries instead of having Crystal write them for me. With this feature, I've been able to do some very complex reports this way. I could have done most of these reports by linking tables together in Crystal and using Crystal's filter and suppression features, but putting the logic in the query means that Crystal is processing less data so the report is faster.Crystal is less suited for showing graphs, unless you just need very simple line or bar graphs. It's also not really suited to doing ad-hoc reporting for most users because it is more technical than some other reporting tools.

Pros

  • Amazon QuickSight is a really easy program to learn how to use.
  • Amazon QuickSight allows our team to customize the data using the various data sets, which makes the available reports incredibly powerful to our organization.
  • Our organization has the ability continually adjust our reports and build new reports as business needs change.
  • Even though our organization has different reports built for different departments, each department can still access and understand reports from across the company.

  • Crystal allows you to connect to virtually any type of data that is available.
  • Crystal Reports has a rich ecosystem of third party products that extend its capabilities. My site lists dozens of tools that provide viewing, scheduling and managing reports, along with formula UFLs that can let your report interact with your operating system and other applications and services.
  • Crystal, especially the more recent versions, let you create virtually any desired layout with the ability to locate objects anywhere and move them based on conditions in the data.
  • Crystal uses the classic "recurring bands" structure for page layout. I find this efficient and very flexible for generating different types of reports.
  • Crystal doesn't require that you set up a meta data layer before creating reports. It gives you direct access to your tables and fields.
  • The interface in Crystal Reports, while sophisticated, is still primarily designed for end users rather than a programmers.

Cons

  • One of the primary challenges I've had with Amazon QuickSight so far is that some of the reports I want to build use data from different data sets. Instead of being able to put all of the information I want to see into one report.
  • Some of our Amazon QuickSight reports only update every 24 hours. It would be great to see that data in real-time.
  • I would remove the various time zones from Amazon QuickSight and only use the time zone we are in.
Megan Sullivan profile photo
  • More complex reports are time intensive.
  • New user finds a lot of difficulties in creating reports.
  • Sharing a report in an organisation is very important, and only a single person can edit in one time. Mailing the report is not a good idea, there should be a option of using cloud-based sharing.

We use what the vendor provides. My choice would be to switch to Cognos because the rest of the organization uses Cognos.

Write your own front end if possible. The report viewer works, but for most "standard" users you will end up doing more support.

Alternatives Considered

All of the other reporting platforms my organization has used previously were within our CRM and not a standalone program. In that we were very limited in being able to slice and dice the data the way that we wanted to
Megan Sullivan profile photo
We selected Crystal Reports almost 20 years ago due to its feature set, flexibility, and cost. The only other reporting tool evaluate at that time was Cognos and it was much more expensive then.17 years ago we spent a few thousand dollars on some developer/designer licenses and built our own Fat client based presentation and batch reporting mechanisms (Fat client runtimes were free).Key issues for us were:1. Universal Access/availability. Financial analysts should be able to run and view Financial Statements and a Machine Operator should be able to see his monthly performance report. Everyone in the company has access to some reporting - limited by who they are/job position.2. The tool needed to be a universal reporting tool - not constrained to one application platform/database.10(?) Years ago we moved to web-based delivery (using SAP's Business Objects Edge Platform). Higher cost but still only low 5 figures. Compared to alternatives such as Oracle's BI offerings its been a steal!

Return on Investment

No answers on this topic
  • Employee Empowerment - Now that our Crystal Reports are written and published, all of our team members have access to run the same reports across the company. Previously, there was only 1 point person in charge of running reports, which took a lot of time away from other job duties.
  • Increased Employee Efficiency - One of the Crystal Reports my company uses has allowed me to take a task that took 3 days to complete and cut the time down to 4 hours. There was a lot of manual data collection and calculations that were done, which has also led to less errors.
  • Accurate real-time data - Since Crystal Reports are very quick to run, we are able to give real time data to our customers rather than maintaining oudated databases in other systems such as Excel.
