More suited I will say deploying your Web-server, Running some cloud applications, Deploying your micro-services, Managed database. Less suited is really hard to say but there can be some scenario where you can use free services like Google spreadsheet scripting for smaller data management and small workflows. Workflow automation is something you need multiple vendors to talk to each other at that time its preferred to go for something else.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure is a fantastic product for most Oracle environments. As far as I know, it supports almost all of the Oracle environments. The only scenarios I could think of where it would be less appropriate to use this product would be if you have an Oracle environment that is outdated by quite a few versions, or if you couldn't afford migrating to OCI.

Pros

Amazon Web Services

  • What I like in it, is its simple notification service which provides a mobile messaging feature to enable push messaging to my mobile devices as well.
  • It helps in sending out notifications to all my teammates with full integrity.
  • Responsive Support.
  • Offers a variety of features that help to manage my workload.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

  • Block Volume provides durability and stability to data. IOPS can be changed on the fly. Always stay true to the promised performance.
  • Block Volume can be encrypted with ease to meet compliance. Can also be easily integrated with OCI vault service for extra security.
  • Object Storage and File Storage are other forms of storage that are secure and extremely easy to configure. FSS is one of the best in the industry when it comes to reliability and performance.
  • SSD block volumes are persistent in OCI unlike many other clouds.

Cons

Amazon Web Services

  • If there is one thing I think AWS needs improvement on, it is the administration dashboard. It can be a nightmare to use especially when trying to access billing. This could be made better, honestly, as there should be a simplified way to access simple admin features.
  • While AWS was fairly easy to integrate into our solutions, it is not as easy to use without some IT knowledge. The dashboards are complicated and designed for someone who is computer savvy. If you are just want to keep track of billing, for example, you may need to take a course or spend a few hours with someone being walked through the admin console.
  • AWS does tend to be slow at times. If you do not have a fast internet connection, it can take time to access services that are hosted on AWS. This is not always the case but we have had clients complain about this if they are trying to access a service from multiple points (IP addresses). The only real fix we found was to make our files cache to another server and only keep current data accessible to clients.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

  • Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Container Engine for Kubernetes (OKE) is a fully managed service that makes it a little hard sometimes to fine tune HPC workloads, for example AI/Deep learning training where a lot of data transfer and compute is needed.
  • The initial setup can certainly be improved with less steps to make it faster and easier to deploy compared to the competition, for example Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE).
  • Documentation and best practice documentation for OKE can be improved especially since there are not a lot of customer references available for large scale deployments that need fine tuned performance.

We are almost entirely satisfied with the service. In order to move off it, we'd have to build for ourselves many of the services that AWS provides and the cost would be prohibitive. Although there are cost savings and security benefits to returning to the colo facility, we could never afford to do it, and we'd hate to give up the innovation and constant cycle of new features that AWS gives us.

We find it quite easy to use. The only challenge is at the outset figuring out exactly what you need, given the large number of available services and options which could take a bit of time to get familiarised with and to decide on.

AWS does not provide the raw performance that you can get by building your own custom infrastructure. However, it is often the case that the benefits of specialized, high-performance hardware do not necessarily outweigh the significant extra cost and risk. Performance as perceived by the user is very different from raw throughput.

Amazon Web Services boasts a really quick and helpful support with multiple communication options as well. For instance, on my personal account I incurred a minor charge due to mismanagement of a service. Upon contacting support, they quickly explained the issue to me and upon request waived the bill as a first time error.

Alternatives Considered

Amazon Web Services

Amazon Web Services is well suited when we have a huge amount of data to store, process, manipulate and get meaningful information out of. It is also suitable when we need very fast data retrieval from the database. They provide a superior product at a fair price which allows us to further our goals and push the limits of what we are capable of as a team / company.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

The main thing we discussed while we Oracle Cloud Infrastructure is [that] we can use/integrate other Oracle products like Oracle Infrastructure storage [and] Infrastructure networking. To be simple, it support[s] all Oracle services, which make the process more reliable in the production environment. Oracle also stacks up against other as it has lesser billing rate as compared with other vendor.

Return on Investment

Amazon Web Services

  • AWS has lowered our employee cost, because you don't have to hire Network/Server Admins to manage infrastructure.
  • Increased productivity by incorporating Continuous Integration with AWS and our development life cycle.
  • Increased customer confidence by being able to provide HIPAA level security in our development and production environments

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

  • We have been able to test at low scale complex solutions using OCI
  • The Free Tier option can be used to test easy of configuration and deployment
  • Since pricing is in U.S. Dollars, it can be a problem in countries with less stable currencies
