We use it in standard trainings for creators. We also use it for exceptions training where a certain concept is either more difficult for some creators to grasp, or too nascent yet and needs a more focused visual explanation.

This is an exceptional product for anyone looking to make, edit and distribute videos demonstrating software or making webinar-like videos for presenting your ideas. If you work on a Mac, this is a great, easy to learn app. Unfortunately, it is currently not available for PC or for tablets like the iPad.

Pros

  • Makes training more engaging for our creativity students
  • Easy to use, so we can get the message of what they need to learn across without the constraints.
  • Adoption - we can create a video short of a concept we need to better clarify in literally minutes.

  • Ease of use - the interface is very intuitive
  • Versatility - the ability to simultaneously record from multiple sources
  • Easy to export - the finished product can be saved as a file, emailed, or posted to online platforms like YouTube

Cons

  • Great visual tool that lets you intelligently communicate what you are seeking to explain to your audience. More features I might suggest would be anything that makes it more interactive with the viewer in real-time.
  • For the price , it is a great deal as is.

  • It works only on the Mac OS platform, not on PC
  • There is no iOS version; it must be used on a Mac OS laptop or desktop

Alternatives Considered

Camtasia is what we used before, and we still use it for longer videos. But for training we found we needed something powerful yet much simpler to use. Animoto also is great for still shots, images, snippets of content that can be created very quickly without any heavy editing work.

While Final Cut Pro X is definitely more full-featured, the learning curve is also considerably steeper. Also, as far as I can tell, Final Cut does not have the built-in capability to record my computer screen. If you are a hardcore video editor, Final Cut is the way to go. If, however, you are looking to produce professional-quality screencasts for educational purposes, Screenflow is the better choice.

Return on Investment

  • Positive as it is so simple to use, and even helps discover where a creative student would benefit far more with a more focused visual.
  • Positive as it is - seriously easy to drop in content and create a video short on any topic, in literally minutes!

  • This allows me to make a presentation once and then distribute it widely. This increases efficiency and effectiveness.
  • It allows me to demonstrate apps and concepts, not just talk about them. This allows clients to grasp concepts much more readily.
