Very well suited for outpatient multi-specialty clinics. May not be perfect for hospital based practices, but I am not in a position to say that with conviction as we are not hospital based organization.

Epic

Epic is great to access from home or anywhere there is a wifi connection. It is very convenient for office or hospital employees. One time when it is not optimal is when I write a Certification of Terminal Illness for a hospice patient. I can never see it again. It drops off of Epic. I wish those notes would remain.

Epic

  • Interdisciplinary Communication: The care of patients improves when you are able to have the entire care team communicate with each other. Epic makes this process very easy by utilizing one chart for all physicians in the organizations. Care decisions and patient safety are greatly improved by seeing past decision making processes.
  • Patient Communication: With features like MyChart and Care Everywhere, Epic gives patients a great deal of control over their information. MyChart acts like a patient portal allowing them to see what their providers have to say, see lab results, make payments, and share information with their doctor all from a mobile device or computer. Having features like this allow the patient to take part in their care.
  • Improves Claim Efficiency: The way that Epic handles insurance claims is incredible. Claims are correct and double checked before they are sent to the insurance companies. This in turn, reduces the number of denials and improves the speed of payments.

Communicating with our staff of over 10,000 employees all within one system helps with logs and transparency between team members. Often, from what I've heard in the past, sticky-notes, emails, and Word Docs. often were shared related to notes before an EMR was implemented. Epic does EMR on the highest scale. Patient safety by allowing all physicians to connect on my chart is why I rate this usability as a nine, because patient safety is considered a high concern.

Epic has a huge database of training, FAQs, and support. Anytime I've needed to contact customer service they've always been very helpful. For a beginner it is important to utilize the training they provide. Big kudos to the support team for putting together such an extensive training database. Each person on the support team is thoroughly trained on how to use Epic.

Epic

Epic has more features and seems to be used by most hospital systems, which means information can be shared between systems. It is not compatible with Cerner, McKesson, or any other of the less commonly used products and we cannot view information from such facilities. I believe Epic has the most features. It automatically saves entries, unlike Quadrimed, for example, which does not save and if you accidentally get logged out you lose your information.

Return on Investment

athenaOne

  • At least 2-3% increase in revenue collection.
  • Timely note completion rate went up.
  • Increase in payments from insurers for P4P.

Epic

  • Improved Customer Satisfaction: After the initial implementation phase, I have seen increases in patient satisfaction. This is due to the increased transparency regarding their care as well as an increase in paid claims.
  • Increased Revenue: In some cases I have seen Medicare denial rates drop from high 80's and 90's down to single digits. I have seen incredible jumps in the time payment is received from an approved claim.
