Broadcom Clarity (formerly CA Project Portfolio Management)

CA PPM is especially good for Agile Framework users from big companies because big companies cannot use only PMI based Project Management frameworks, but also have to use an appropriate project Agile frameworks (like Scrum, Kamban). So you have to use both of them on the appropriate projects. In this case if you don't use one tool for both frameworks you could get stuck for doing resource management. CA PPM is solving this problem perfectly.

Planview PPM Pro (formerly Innotas)

Planview PPM Pro (formerly Innotas) is perfect for waterfall or mostly waterfall shops. If you are an agile shop, you need to implement Lean Kit or will not have the agile capabilities. We had success linking VersionOne to Planview PPM Pro (formerly Innotas) through lean kit but it is a lot of maintenance to keep adding fields, and this does not fully support a feature team link to time tracking.

Pros

Broadcom Clarity (formerly CA Project Portfolio Management)

  • CA PPM is for all types of employees with busy schedules or who can not work in the office at a certain time.
  • Supports Scrum, Kanban and other Agile Frameworks. It's very important for a PPM tool because Agile Transformation is the Top Trend. Every PPM tool has to work with both frameworks.
  • CA Clarity's analysis functions are impressive, and give the best clean graphic representations depend on your data. The software, overall, is very feature-rich.
  • Allows you to provide the right amount of detail within the stories and acceptance criteria. From tasks to stories, stories to features, and so on.

Planview PPM Pro (formerly Innotas)

  • The configurability of PPM Pro is the best I have seen in any of the PPM Pro tools I have used in my career. We are able to configure work flows that integrate into multiple PPM processes and integrate or isolate those processes with the others as needed.
  • The reporting capability is on par, and in many cases better, than other tools I have used. The ability to combine data elements and perform create unique calculations for reports is the best I have encountered.
  • The tools available for resource management are robust and provide great visibility into resource capacity and unfilled demand.
  • The integrations with the other tools in the Planview product line allow a full range of planning, management, and team activities in a format that suits the needs of each individual team.

Cons

Broadcom Clarity (formerly CA Project Portfolio Management)

  • The best side is also the bad side: It requires too much effort to link stories to features, it's too hard to see the details and requires too much effort to do that.
  • Because it is feature-rich tool learning the tool took a while, so that training must do so as well.
  • The features are all a little bit hidden. It would be better to improve the UI with UX.
  • License cost is quite high as compared with other tools like JIRA.

Because I never evaluated other tools, I would be open to considering others. Given our establishment with Innotas and the value it has provided us, separating from it would cause some organizational discomfort. However, if a tool existed with a more intuitive interface for manipulating the data and factors of projects and resources, I would be very interested.

Still cumbersome in some areas. It really depends on the individual. I've seen very smart developers who get lost just managing tasks and logging time. Whereas others use the system with ease

Their ability to assist and answer questions when needed is incredible. They create innovative ways to share information and help customers trouble shoot. I didn't give it a ten because I believe they could do a better job of personally reaching out to customers and providing improvement guidance based on where the customer is at and their needs at the time

It's been since 2009. A lot has changed. We have not grown as much as we could have because of executive backing.

Alternatives Considered

Broadcom Clarity (formerly CA Project Portfolio Management)

  • Agile framework support is the best attribute for CA PPM.
  • Integrating capability within your whole back office (HR, Finance, P2P, ...)
  • Story linking capability is a distinctive feature in our purchase of this product.
  • It is so customizable inside the CA PPM where you can set up all types of filters. This is the best part of Clarity for me.

During a previous position I used Talisma CRM to keep track of marketing, sales, and customers. While they are slightly different, Innotas is overall better since Talisma from what I recall was rather disorganized. I have also used Ultratime to keep track of employee work hours and Innotas also has a significantly better interface and significantly more features than Ultratime with regards to employee management.

Return on Investment

Broadcom Clarity (formerly CA Project Portfolio Management)

  • CA PPM made us transparent. We used the charts and graphs to show executives our progress for every iteration. There was no need to progress meetings so everything visible.
  • We have gained the ability to link stories with tasks. In this way we were not in need of extra effort for linking them in Excel or asking over and over again for developers and stories development.
  • Single source of truth on the overall project portfolio and program. Clear insights in demand and capacity for all business departments and espacially for internal IT. There was no more need to argue on demand, capacity, priority and devlopment of projects.

Planview PPM Pro (formerly Innotas)

  • I did not have access to this level of decision making nor analysis, but since our license has been twice renewed I imagine that it is still useful to fulfill the objectives for which it was chosen.
  • From our project managers perspective they would still prefer to manage their plans exclusively in MS Project, however they do understand and accept the business needs to track resource time and their split between capitalized and operational tasks.
  • Our ability to create a process capable of handling requests from the business to IT and the integration of those approved requests into existing projects was a key decision to centralize the communication between the two organizations.
