DB2

DB2 is suitable for any use. The main one is certainly the creation of an online database that can be queried online through TP queries and through batch reports. It is necessary to take care of the database maintenance to allow maximum performance, for this, there are the utilities that help the system operators to do it.

Oracle Autonomous Database

Oracle Autonomous Database is good when you need the database to tune itself, create resource plans and gives indexing recommendations. Storage management is also important aspect that Oracle Autonomous Database is providing. We used to have an error messages when one table space is full, or the users are disconnected from the system when the memory is full. I think that this database is appropriate and more features are very welcome.

Pros

DB2

  • DB2 maintains itself very well. The Task Scheduler component of DB2 allows for statistics gathering and reorganization of indexes and tables without user interaction or without specific knowledge of cron or Windows Task Scheduler / Scheduled jobs.
  • Its use of ASYNC, NEARSYNC, and SYNC HADR (High Availability Disaster Recovery ) models gives you a range of options for maintaining a very high uptime ratio. Failover from PRIMARY to SECONDARY becomes very easy with just a single command or windowed mouse click.
  • Task Scheduler ( DB2 9.7 and earlier ) allows for jobs to be run within other jobs, and exit and error codes can define what other jobs are run. This allows for ease of maintenance without third party softwares.
  • Tablespace usage and automatic storage help keep your data segmented while at rest, making partitioning easier.
  • Ability to run commands via CLI (Command Line Interface) or via Control Center / Data Studio ( DB2 10.x+) makes administration a breeze.

Oracle Autonomous Database

  • Robust - this product doesn't have a lot of downtime. It's less prone to errors than some other tools I've worked with.
  • Scalable - we can keep adding more things to it. We haven't hit any roadblocks when we've tried to do more with our database.

Cons

DB2

  • IBM is really behind in delivering developer tools. They pride themselves on Data Studio, but it is just frustrating.
  • Marketing. Horrible to do a Google search and get returns for a COMPLETELY different product, for z/os. Why they share the same name is beyond me. Better marketing would also increase the user base and help the product mature.
  • Slower than the competition to roll out next-generation features.

Oracle Autonomous Database

  • Autonomous DB integration with PeopleSoft. Issues noticed in the application.
  • More flexibility of user access to DB OS.
  • External connections using DB link is not possible .
  • Appears sophisticated as a majority of the controls reside with Oracle in terms of security, patching, maintenance, tuning. Less responsibility to a proficient DBA.

Autonomous is the way of the future and this is one system which is crucial to any system and is also autonomous. It is self-tuning and self-maintaining which are major advantages.

You have to be well versed in using the technology, not only from a GUI interface but from a command line interface to successfully use this software to its fullest.

DB2 for i is extremely stable. I've experienced system slowdowns and performance issues on badly configured systems or badly configured system accessing the DB but that's it, never had a problem caused purely by the software. Support is also pretty good.

The performances are exceptional if you take care to maintain the database. It is a very powerful tool and at the same time very easy to use. In our installation, we expect a DB machine on the mainframe with access to the database through ODBC connectors directly from branch servers, with fabulous end users experience.

Alternatives Considered

DB2

DB2 is a similar product that is most respected. Oracle might be supported in a broader context, but DB2 is superior on every platform where the choice is there. Licensing is also a factor in which DB2 is much better, which might offset any cost differences. DB2 support is also much better at all tiers.

Oracle Autonomous Database

Features provided by Oracle Autonomous Database including automation, high availability, self-securing, self-repairing and automated database tuning are hugely unique and are not supported by products from other vendors. According to the research we have performed so far, it seems that the introduction of machine learning algorithms is a winning factor that will become more and more desirable in the world of enterprise database products.

It can grow as your company grows. It also plays well with Crystal Reports and other BI software once you create an ODBC connection for the DB. It can be managed with SQL management studio so no extra software is needed for that.

Return on Investment

DB2

  • Positive - Very good performance as compared to other traditional DBs.
  • Positive - Transaction and query search are made easy from a DB level with good performance, also runs on top scape on AIX servers.
  • Negative - There is always room for improvement, such as Webex queries and the GUI base tool. Also the available support documentation should be improved.

Oracle Autonomous Database

  • Oracle Autonomous Database, and the safe harbor statements, are good, and when it comes to availability Oracle should control the number of bugs we hit every year, and they need to test all those bugs and the impacts before they release. They may be doing it today, but still, they need to invest their money into it. Even TDE is new and needs to improve a lot. The troubleshooting with TDE and skill level in Oracle needs to improve.
