Dell EMC VxRail
VxRail is very well suited to large-scale homogeneous workloads, VDI being the prime example. Anywhere you have a large number of VMs that are doing the same thing, VxRail is a good fit. If you have workloads that are greatly varied, VxRail should not be your first choice.

We have based our entire company on the Nutanix hardware and AOS to support all of our servers and clients that we use for our business. It has been a solid product with HA features that allow us to run our business without interruption. For virtualization it is the best solution I have used in the last 7 years. We have both high performance systems and those that require vast amounts of resources and we have found that Nutanix works well in both instances.

Pros
Dell EMC VxRail
- Stability, the platform has not had any major issues or minor issues since deployment.
- Management, the VxRail platform has a single plane of glass for management.
- Scaling, VxRail is easily scaled for more resources.

- Nutanix AHV removes the headache from clustering. Once it's set up--which a Nutanix rep completed--the system is largely self-managed.
- It was a turnkey installation, and I was building virtual machines from day one.
- The system automatically manages moving VMs from cluster to cluster when software updates are performed on the Nutanix system that require the nodes to be rebooted, so there is no down time.
- System management from a web browser is easy management, as it can be managed from anywhere there is Internet connectivity.
- It supports Windows and Linux VMs equally well, allowing access to the VMs from within the browser. This can be much easier than using remote desktop or VNC.

Cons
Dell EMC VxRail
- Initial installation services leave a lot to be desired. We struggled to get the first units in service. Subsequent units were very easy to install though...
- Dell/EMC has an A/B maintenance cycle for updates. Make sure ALL of your units are on the same cycle. It is difficult (but not quite impossible) to get them changes after installation
- I would like to see a sub $100k offering for branch offices.

- Can be priced high at times.
- The one downside I have working with Nutanix is the sales team. They seem to try to add in extra goodies to sales quotes or push for extras that you don't really need and you have to tell them to take them out. Don't be afraid to push back on them.
- Need to analyze sizing with sales team to ensure right sizing.

We made a huge financial investment with this platform (four clusters, all-flash storage array), so we're in it for the long haul. Luckily it's a beast. I've had to use support more than any other platform I've administered, but the help has been very good. Nutanix continues to add features and innovations which increase the ROI

While you are going to have to comfortable with CLI to perform a lot of functions, the truth is most of the day-to-day work is done right through the web interface. That's one area that has improved a lot in the two years I've had it: how much can be done through the browser as opposed to the command line. And I still would like to see the system better documented. The articles often seem to presume a high level of knowledge about the system, making it difficult sometimes to complete tasks that I would like to be able to perform without contacting tech support.

Most are very good, performance is good. But some of the pre-build VMs took a longer time to boot up. Sometimes, we transfer data from one VM to another VM, it is actually bit slower than we expected. Other than those, we do not have other challeges.

Nutanix support is generally a pretty good experience. When you call them you generally get someone who knows what they're doing and is able to walk you right through the simple issues. Occasionally we have run in to situations where they weren't able to arrive at a solution for us right away, but they have always been good at followup.

IPv6 is needed for link local discovery. We do not have IPv6 configured on our network so the easiest way to get our nodes configured and discovered by foundation was to configure the IPv4 addressing within the node prior to trying to discover with foundation.

At the time we had a deployment of SimpliVity which did not measure up. We demo'd other products such as HyperFlex. We appreciated the ease of use of the VxRail and the overall value.

We looked at both Simplivity and Cisco HyperFlex. Both are pretty good in their own right. Simplivity was very 'efficient' in the way they handled data, but we didn't like the idea of a propitiatory hardware card. Cisco's HyperFlex was our second choice, but we were so impressed with what Nutanix had done for us already, that we were already leaning toward that.

Dell EMC VxRail
- VxRail has made our VDI deployment easy to scale and (more importantly), made scaling the environment easy to justify to management.
- When comparing to other similar solutions, the tight integration with Vmware code releases made VxRail much more stable. We have had much less downtime from the VxRail infrastructure than in our traditional infrastructure stacks.

- Found an immediate reclamation of time. SAN's are a pain to manage and update - Nutanix made turned a couple hours of work into one click.
- They are a software company. Every Time they come out with an update I find my performance improving, or a new feature added. Soon I'll be able to give my developers controlled self-service capabilities. I originally bought hardware and it's evolving on me into a private cloud in a box.
