We put it through its paces with our drawings and it works fine. We do a lot of wiring diagrams and industrial control panel layout drawings, so we use a lot of its 2D capabilities. I would not use it in a multi-user environment where you have multiple designers working on one project at a time. This software makes no provisions for allowing multiple users to work at the same time on the same drawing and has no native version control. And because of their poor software control, DraftSight many times put out versions that are "crashy", which would make a lot of people very unproductive very quickly. I would look at other products for larger projects like that.

Onshape is a web-based 3D software that allows you to work from anywhere, but it has a disadvantage when your internet connection is slow. Overall, Onshape is a fantastic software program in general. All you need to do is ensure a good connection, and everything will be fine. Onshape is excellent for creating 3D parts and assemblies. However, at some points, we tend to encounter drawing glitches. Lines or elements are not always completely generated.

Pros

Dassault Systemes

  • You can easily bring in a dwg format drawing into the programme and it will display the information just as well as AutoCAD.
  • The programme supports shortcut features or one-click buttons for the most commonly used operations.
  • Script files can be used which is a bonus.

  • Always on and available in any level of machine. No need for a workstation.
  • Lack of files and need to manage same.
  • Like the document approach where everything related to the project can be in a single logical container.
  • Like the overall speed and lack of crashes or need to update.
  • Like that it will import nearly anything. We often use it as a file translator for the SW folks.
  • Like the constant development and frequent feature improvements.
  • Really like the support. Nearly every time we need assistance with something and submit a ticket, there is a rep responding within literally, minutes. Best support in the business.
  • Like the team too. Always easy to get in touch with and responsive to issues and or questions.
  • Feature scripts. We don't yet program our own, but we do use those created by others. Having that ability really opens up what the tool can be if you can program it. I'm learning Python right now because I want to be able to dig into that side of the tool and see what I can do.

Cons

Dassault Systemes

  • Draftsight could run better on lower performace machines, even on high performance machines there can be some lag now and again.
  • There used to be a more basic subscription version which was perfect for our needs, now lowest subscription is more expensive. Bringing back the standard version would be great.
  • Including hash pattern files would be very useful.

  • Coordinate systems are difficult to see and work with. Assemblies should start with coordinate systems
  • Mate connectors work well in theory, but in practice have introduced extra work in some cases where geometry is complex. It would be great to have the option to create assemblies in a more traditional fashion.
  • Part and Assembly studio delineation is confusing. Part studios seem to offer a lot of the same capability as assemblies (in that each part studio can contain multiple solid bodies) but lack some key functionality (moving parts within the part studio being the largest opportunity for improvement -> the current "transform" button does not have a "freeform" move which would be useful in cases where the design of one part is driven by geometry of a moving part.

It has given us, a small startup, the ability to compete effectively with far larger competitors by evening the playing field at a low cost.

Familiarity and ability to work from any location. Also easy to cooperate with potential customers, existing customers, systems users, and fabricating shops. Most of the standard designs are now in On Shape and I would like to continue using it. It is easier to run versions to clarify imrovements to the previous designs

Usability

Dassault Systemes

Easy if you know how to use CAD software. But is not very difficult to learn using DraftSight if this is your first CAD software. As soon as you get in to it the work flow will save you a lot of time and its simple interface is very nice.

Onshape is great software and I have no trouble recommending it to CAD users and companies that need to do design work

Other than a bug created by a VAR tech support that didn't get resolved until I installed the next version, DraftSight has worked fine.

Performance

We have never experienced any such problem. Pages load quickly, and this may partly be an artifact of using top- end hardware. And we have never had customers complain of issues with opening and using our exported files.

Support Rating

Dassault Systemes

Technical support seems to be overseas with broken English and difficulty to read English. I asked for a trial license to try the fix but it was declined. Ask pratiksha.dahotre and gayatri.keskar for details. In summary, they released a broken version, I helped to fix by providing feedback and error logs. They claimed it is fixed but I can't test it.

Support is built in. It lets you take a screenshot and mark it up in the support system. It lets me easily share a document with support and they will generally investigate the issue promptly (within 24 hours, sometimes within an hour). Generally they can fix it quickly as well. I also submit feature requests this way as well and get feedback with that. No email needed! All within Onshape.

An easy to use User Guide would help new and inexperienced designers get up and running even quicker. Ideally, intelligent prompts in pop ups would be wonderful, but at this cost it is a lot to ask.

It is cloud-based, running in a browser and there is no need for software installation. Onshape has published all the source code and videos explaining how the software works. It saves all your data in a database, using multiple virtual machines to speed up regeneration time when necessary if you have complex models.

Alternatives Considered

Dassault Systemes

While SketchUp is free, DraftSights cost is minimal and its abilities are much greater. It is so much easier to layout and modifies a system design. Since DraftSight is compatible with all versions of CAD, it makes it easy to collaborate with customers on their specific system design. We spend less time and see greater sales on our projects.

I have used SOLIDWORKS for over four years, and the vault system is time intensive for control of design history, and revision management. I have used Pro-E for over four years, and this has the capability but is not user-friendly. Not needing high-end computers is another great reason to choose Onshape

Return on Investment

Dassault Systemes

  • I have been able to save countless hours by making drawing corrections myself. Previously, I would have had to wait hours or days to get drawings back from our customers.
  • In the past year I would say that DraftSight has saved roughly 200 hours. That time would have been spent waiting for our customers to make corrections and then send them back to us.

PTC

  • Allows us to deploy additional engineers into the system easily and cost-effectively. We do not need to spend a lot on specialized engineering work stations to get our team up and running with great performance.
  • Even though its cloud-based, when dealing with complex machines and assemblies the speed of the GPU still matters. The nice thing though is instead of specialized engineering work stations having a good 3D gaming type GPU is preferred and gets much better performance.
  • No need to store files locally and create back-ups of those files. No need for local PDM or servers.
